OUR SCREENINGS FOR THIS MONTH will be on Thursday August 20th, featuring two powerful Kenyan films and an evening of cinema, community, and conversation.

This special night is an August collaboration between Kulture Klub KE and Monday Movie Nights by Mugambi Nthiga (our first-time collaboration)!

We begin with Float (dir. Lydia Matata), a tender and resonant short film following Wendo, a fourteen-year-old swimming champion returning to practice after the Christmas break. Facing the casual cruelties of body scrutiny from her brother and coach, Wendo finds an unexpected sanctuary in Mariam, a cleaner learning to swim. In the tranquil hours after practice, an exchange unfolds—Wendo teaches Mariam how to float in the water, while Mariam teaches Wendo how to find comfort in her own skin.

And finally, Shimoni (dir. 2022, dir. Angela Wamai), a moving meditation on the timeless consequences of unspoken trauma. After seven years in prison, 35-year-old Geoffrey returns to his home village, keeping to himself and retreating into silence until a man from his nightmares suddenly appears. Angela Wanjiku Wamai’s powerful dramatic debut balances striking visual imagery with deeply human questions of guilt, survival, and the inescapable pain of open wounds that find no recognition.

📍 Cheche Books — Kauria Close, Off Muthangari Road, Lavington

We’re super proud to announce our Feature for our first screening this month - Shimoni @shimonithefilm ,written and directed by the brilliant Angela Wamai @wamaiw

She is a Kenyan filmmaker and editor who studied film at EICTV in Havana and was recently awarded Best Film Editor by Women in Film Awards Kenya. Shimoni is her feature directorial debut.

The film follows Geoffrey, a 35 year old man released from prison after serving 7 years. He is whisked away to Shimoni; a sleepy village in rural Kenya. A place he loathes. In Shimoni, he stays in the local Catholic Church compound. Quickly the village starts to morph into a new prison; Geoffrey sleeps in a tiny shack, has to do menial farm work, has little access to his family who want nothing to do with him, and has a prison guard in the form of a priest dictating his every move. Also, Geoffrey never leaves the Church compound. He can’t; something beyond its walls terrifies him. He resigns himself to this new internment. Then, one Sunday after Mass, Geoffrey sees a man with a white patch of hair. Petrified, he pees his pants, and in a moment of rage, kills a calf. The monster has found him in his hiding place.

A milestone for us – Shimoni is also our first feature acted Kikuyu, Swahili and a bit of English. We promised to introduce films in our different mother tongues, and we are honored to fulfill it by sharing this heartfelt story with you.

To prepare you emotionally and mentally, this is a heavy film. Come with open hearts and minds to watch it and share your thoughts and feelings from the experience. Let’s hold each other through it🫂🫶🏽

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

At S.A.F.E. Kenya, we’re widening the conversation to include a group that is often left out: people in prison.

As the impact producers behind #shimoni , directed by Angela Wamai ( @wamaiw), we understand that many #incarcerated individuals are often denied access to #mental #health support—a fundamental human right.
Instead of receiving care, many face systems can deepen trauma and cause further harm.

Through the power of film, @shimonithefilm is challenging the status quo, starting critical conversations, and creating space for dialogue around mental health support and policy reform within Kenya’s prison system through organisations like ours

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Endless gratitude to @wamaiw for trusting us with her powerful film, for being there, and for the conversation that left the room buzzing long after. Watching how deeply everyone was drawn into @shimonithefilm , the silence, the emotion, the stillness , was something truly special to witness.

To @dayvogram , who guided the evening with so much heart and energy, you set the tone perfectly, thank you.
To @simiyu01 , whose belief in what we’re building made this collaboration between ALX and Sigana possible and @ti.to.h and @mbuvi_filmmaker for being so open to welcome us to your space and making this collaboration work.
To @so_stephani for your unwavering support, creativity, and partnership throughout this journey, @maureen.m_k for being my sounding board and helping me balance all the crazy ideas I had and @lisajarrold, for your support and encouragement.
And last but not least, to everyone who came out in the rain — thank you for showing up, for leaning in, and for reminding us why we do this.

Here’s to stories that move us and to the people who make nights like this possible. 🎬
