🧩 Weekly Shonen Jump n.45 ~ 1999 🧩

🇬🇧 Today I’m switching things up a bit!
On top of containing chapter n.107 of One Piece, this 1999 issue is a total holy grail that I finally tracked down after years of searching.
The reason? Inside, you’ll find Naruto chapter n.3, titled “Sasuke Uchiha”, which marks the absolute first appearance of Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi.
Basically, we’re witnessing the birth of Team 7, making this one of the rarest and most sought-after collectible issues out there, second only to the legendary issue featuring the very first chapter of the series.

🗡️ SAO 🗡️

Beckett 9.8 SAO: Kiss and Fly vol. 1
1st Print - 2020

Here’s some late day SAO action. Typical SAO front cover art style and featuring Kirito and Asuna but missing the obi. It’s not the oldest of the SAO series in our collection but it’s one of the nicer in grade. The story is set in ALfheim Online and is part of the SAO canon but function as side stories via the light novel. They’re a nice addition to the overall SAO content but may have only been visited by the most dedicated of SAO fans.

Floppy Manga Monday 📚🥷

This week we’re going back to 1988 with The Legend of Kamui Issue 25 by Sanpei Shirato!

These old Viz/Eclipse floppies are such a cool piece of manga history, but this one also gave me the chance to dive into Shirato, Garo and the world of gekiga.

I’ve really grown to love exploring gekiga and artists like Tadao Tsuge, Yoshiharu Tsuge, Shigeru Mizuki and more. There’s so much manga history to uncover through these old books.

Have you ever read The Legend of Kamui?

Stay reading, stay being you. 👑

Aki Hayakawa

Beckett 9.2 Chainsaw Man Vol. 4
1st Print - 2019

The variety of art style and coloring really make these covers pop, and it’s hard to find a cover that misses the mark. Volume 4, featuring Aki, was printed exactly seven years ago to the day. Honestly, it’s hard to believe it’s been that long AND we only have one full season of the anime.

Sometimes we get introduced to the story by anime but often it’s through manga or magazine. That’s been the case even with marvel and DC in my early childhood, so I always find it interesting to see how the story from the pages comes to life. This anime does a fantastic job adding movement and enhancing the emotion, and so much so that I’m not sure I’m ready for what season 2 has in store.

Corazon

Funko Pop: Corazon 1709 Shared Sticker
Signed by: Koichi Yamadera

Back from Japan and freshly signed. The last time Yamadera-san signed my partner and I had to make a choice between Corazon and Spike. I was the lucky one that time but we made up for it this round. The signature and CN look great, but unfortunately the personalization was wrong. I’ll end up removing it but instead of writing my partner’s name we got something completely different. The notes had the details but mistakes keep happening.

Floppy Manga Monday 📚💥🔥

Pulled out my AKIRA Issue 2 from Epic Comics for this one!

Started off talking about Steve Oliff and Olyoptics, and how the coloring on these releases helped push comic coloring and computer-assisted color separation forward.

But what I really wanted to talk about is AKIRA’s impact beyond manga. You can see its influence everywhere, from Ye pulling inspiration from AKIRA throughout his career to anime continuing to inspire music, fashion, film, and visuals today.

That influence is still going strong too, with artists like The Weeknd recently tapping into Evangelion.

What manga or anime cultural moment stands out to you the most? 👇🏾

Stay reading, stay being you.

🌸 Heroines 🌸

One Piece Heroines Novel
1st Print - 2021

Not manga but an excellent novel with incredible artwork. I really loved Nami’s episode they released this year and I really hope we see more of these stories brought to life. I won’t spoil the remainder, but this novel has also has episodes for Robin, Vivi, and Perona. We also have a 1st print of Heroines Colorful (future post), which contains episodes: Hancock, Tashigi, Reiju, and Uta.

Enjoy and apologies for the HDR!

Pure 90s sci-fi 🚀

Macross II Issue 2 from Viz Comics, 1992. From the floppy manga era to early Animerica promos, this issue is a little time capsule of manga history in America.

What are some of your memories from this era and would you collect this format again if they brought it back?
