And sometimes it’s not your base rate that’s hurting your margins — it’s everything happening around it.

Box dimensions. Accessorial charges. Service levels. Invoice adjustments. Small details can turn into very real shipping expenses when you’re sending packages or freight every week.

Four rules I want every business shipping with UPS or LTL freight to remember:

📦 Measure your boxes — dimensional weight matters.
🚛 Know your accessorials — especially with LTL freight.
💰 Compare more than the quoted rate — service and support matter.
🧾 Review your invoices — unexpected charges deserve a second look.

Your package size matters. 📦

One of the biggest shipping misconceptions I hear is that your rate is based only on how much your package weighs.

Not always.

UPS and other small parcel carriers can use dimensional weight (DIM weight), which considers how much space your package takes up, not just what it weighs.

That means a lightweight product packed in a larger box could be billed at a much higher weight than what you see on the scale.

And this is where having the right shipping agreement for your business can make a major difference.

I recently worked with a fulfillment operation shipping larger electronics. Because their products have unique dimensions and weights, we were able to look at a more customized pricing structure that better matched what they actually ship.

That’s why I always tell businesses: don’t only ask, “What’s my discount?”

Ask:

“Is my shipping contract actually designed around my products?”

Your box dimensions, actual weight, DIM weight, shipping zones, volume and product mix all matter when evaluating your shipping costs.

What a season💪 It was a tough race for our strategy to pay off with no yellows. We didn’t quite have the pace to close it out how I felt this team deserved but the 15 crew and everyone on this team has worked so hard all year to get us where we are. I have never had a better time doing this with a group of people than I am right now.
