Hello dear ones!
The final week of shows starts again tonight. Today the lovely/kind Age review was printed on paper and so I cut it out and put it on my wall next to a piece of paper I made during an art therapy session at the psych ward this year. The Carrot Show is strangely not about carrots at all. I’m very proud of it and I’m very very aware of not only posting highlights in these times/remembering the difficult year that has brought me to it. Social media and fringe festivals are weird but also CAN be good and not everything is black and white and yes. I love you all. Have a good Tuesday xxxxxxxx

I didn’t invite any reviewers to this season because it makes me incredibly nervous because I really do care but also because I don’t really like the reviews and stars and awards and money side of business/measuring art etc. and because I think it’s very subjective and doesn’t really matter!

This is NOT a comment at ALL directed at the glorious Sonia Nair (who I’d have wished to be the reviewer for this show out of everyone tbh and who came without being asked - which I am genuinely very grateful for).

I am very proud of this review, especially as it was my ‘second album’ show and also because this review was from the second run with all of the elements put together.

My brain also worries about stars and my perfectionism thinks ‘oh no it’s not five’ which is also why I remind myself that stars and reviews and awards are actually, at the end of the day, very unimportant.

I did want to share this though because prompted by others, thought it might be a good way to encourage people to come see it before it ends next Saturday because I do want people to see it now 🧡🧡🧡🧡

In year six someone told me that I was ‘the weirdest person (they) knew that could still be cool’ and I have ridden with that for the rest of my life. I also now probably think that it’s explained by being neurodiverse without realising it until the last few years. But anyway! We persist! Best and weirdest is fun !! 🥲🥹🧡🧡🧡🥕🥕🥕🕺💜🥕

Hello dear angels.

The Carrot Show is a month away!

What IS the carrot show?

WELL! Unlike Shitbag, which was written a year before I ever produced it, this show is more of a collage that’s still being assembled !!?!!

NO ONE PANIC!

It’s a wild mixture of stop-motion animation, marionette and shadow puppetry, paper-maché, interviews with my grandma, improvised piano and singing - all devised and stuck together with the help of masking tape, super glue and (MOST helpfully) my excellent creative and romantic partner @justingardam 🧡

It’s about how we use creative distraction to cope with a burning world, our own broken bodies and brains and how much distraction is ok until we need to re-engage with the world politically and socially again.

How do we find a balance between self-soothing and being present in an increasingly absurd world?

I’m not sure really. But I’d love to have you all in a room to watch a collage and eat a carrot.

Hello dear ones - I’m trialling something with very low stakes/completely independently etc.

In 2021 I started ‘tiny table reads’ as a way to connect local emerging actors and writers to do ‘table reads’ of new works. It was a way to connect during lockdowns, to encourage new work and connect creators who might not otherwise meet.

This has a similar vibe/intention and stems from being the target audience myself: that is, a mostly solo creative who IS neurodiverse and is more home-bound than I ‘wish I was’ who craves connection and needs a place for ‘accountability’ / body doubling.

Zoom OBVIOUSLY isn’t for everyone, but for anyone who thinks this might be helpful - let’s give it a try!

This Sunday, zoom link to be added to bios and my stories this Sunday.

4-6pm free time to do admin, hobbies, creative work or household chores that have been avoided while saying hi to others in a similar boat!

Ok - I’ll actually legitimately slow down after this last post. It never rains but it pours (in small increments).

I was INCREDIBLY lucky to be given a creative and morale-boosting lifeline earlier this year when @melbfringe accepted my application (after many rejections from other companies) to be a writer-in-training with the fantastic @joeltt__ and @unplugged_radiator.

We’re all writing full plays, with a 20 minute excerpt of all three being read at @fortyfivedownstairs on the 5th of October (yes that is the DAY before I open my other show lol sos).

It’s raining, it’s pouring and I’m fatigued and snoring ✨

Really excited to develop my piece further in the coming weeks / years and get an exciting team on board. Hooray for learning to write beyond solo autobiographical works!
