I love watching people hangout, from the serious to the humorous, from the FORUM to the back room of the emergency stairwell converted into a smoking area, from the stage to the beer tables.

From there, closeness is born, the nation’s trauma is healed by ordinary people, and long-standing conflicts are diluted with our own little histories, from play scripts. There, we share strategies, various ways to go beyond what the state doesn’t do, conjuring up shared imaginations to circumvent censorship, funding burdens, and even territorial boundaries.

I love seeing people gather and talk. From there, ideas and other impulses emerge to intertwine and connect the face of being Asian today.

Asia, a long history shredded by the system, how can we overcome this? What are the alternatives?

Day 3 also saw @spac_shizuoka @spac_biotope continuing their presentation of the BIOTOPE incubation programme with four other selected participating artists, Guelan Varela-Luarca, Jaturachai Srichanwanpen (Chuan), Shohifur Ridho’i and Adriana Nordin Manan, sharing their ongoing practice and proposal for the final work in 2028.

Perhaps because it’s Day 3 already so everybody seemed to have warmed up with full energy. All presentations on their journey in creating theatre works, searching for their voice and the gaps they want to bridge, navigating social and political landscapes that have always been changing, recognising and working with shifting identities, and their aspirations for the future, were really engaging.

I hope to see in the next two years the programme really pushes the boundaries of these ‘emerging’ (but actually emerged quite a lot already) artists, to
(1) sustain the spirit of experimentation in theatre-making
(2) respond to / critique their own ecosystems or comfort zone
(3) expand and/or deepen the collaborative network and artistic rigour across Asia

Let’s start to find funding to see the finale in Shizuoka in 2028!

(Photos of artists who presented on Day 2 — Kaori Nishio, Jean-Baptiste Phou and Kyle Yamada — are added here for documentation sake)
