NEW art drop from exquisite photographer @iainmckell - 9 sensational silkscreen prints handmade by the fantastic Joe & Alex @shojisilkscreen

Entitled ‘The Skinhead Series’, these works have been developed from an original idea that began in the late 70’s, further captured and used by Massive Attack for the cover of their ‘Rituals EP’.

An important body of work that represents historic British subculture, we are proud to be representing these at Helm Gallery.

I Captured this shot at Wembley Arena in 1988 during Whitney Houston’s iconic Moment of Truth tour, this image has remained unseen in my archive for almost 40 years.
Now reimagined as a unique 100 × 70 cm artwork, combining silk screen uv varnish, hand embellishment of diamond dust and a beautifully crafted inlay frame, it is a true statement piece.

This recent private preview in Canford Cliffs offered a select group of guests the opportunity to experience my work within a stunning private coastal residence, allowing time and space to absorb the pieces as they will ultimately be displayed and lived with.
The evening included the private debut of ‘D to the I’ - a highly anticipated and previously unseen image of Prince from 1988, together with the new Whitney Houston silkscreen featuring UV varnish and diamond dust, alongside selected glass works and pieces from the forthcoming Rock Scandal collection. With champagne flowing and conversations unfolding long into the evening, guests explored not only the stories behind the images but the evolution of the work itself - from unseen 35mm slides and analogue photography to contemporary fine art pieces created through glass, silkscreen, diamond dust and hand embellishment.
The exclusive event offered a rare opportunity to experience these new works exactly as intended: at scale, in context and among fellow lovers of rock music, photography and art. Thank you @l121cannon for your stunning hospitality!

A sensational preview evening at Drax Studio saw guests welcomed to the debut unveiling of several major new works from Rock Legends Live.
Among the standout pieces were ‘D to the I’ - a striking one-off diamond-dusted previously unseen portrait of Prince - alongside a hand-embellished diamond dusted work of Whitney Houston. A previously unseen image of Bruce Springsteen was also revealed, presented on glass. Other works were presented on Chromaluxe, alongside a curated collection of large-scale contemporary rock portraits drawn from Zoe’s rediscovered 35mm archive.
The exhibition marks an important new chapter for the collection, transforming unseen live music photography from the late 1980s and early 1990s into highly collectible contemporary fine art.
The Rock Legends Live residency at Drax Studio continues until 31 May and is open daily from 10am.

“Klein, Rose and Oma”
Materials: Mahogany bark dyes on silk and linen
Method: Batik tulis, batik cap and natural dye (hand drawn wax and stamp wax)
Made in Indonesia in collaboration with artisans from Batik Winotosastro and Padapa Natural Dye and Shoji Silkscreen (UK)
180 x 240cm

I wanted to create a way to make larger pieces of batik designed for art and interior spaces. I paired Batik Winotosastro, one of the oldest remaining studios that still work with traditional methods, and Padapa Natural Dye, a natural dye studio both in Yogyakarta to work together on heavier fabrics with a combination of traditional batik stamps, and my orchid pattern up to three step dye and wax processes. The portrait of my mother, grandmother and great grandmother are silk screened on natural dye linen.

Thank you to Fatimah, Chalien, Ibu Hani, Joe and Lou without whom this piece would not be possible.
