Back in April the team from @designinglocal (Meredith, Josh and Todd) came from Ohio to meet the local artist engagement team (Lashonda, Lamar, Shawn and me). They asked each of us to take them on a tour. It was a sunny Monday and I showed them my neighborhood, the community gardens, the school and library where we found a poetry class, we paid our respects to the lake and had a private tour of the yards thanks to the wonderful Kristina.

We also met Heather and Kevin who work for the office of urban planning and learned more about the process around the Arts and Culture plan that is being developed and that we are tasked to make sure people provide their input in a creative way. There are time constraints and budget limits as always but I hope people (who identify as artists or not) can engage in this process and share your vision and ideas to improve access to art and culture (as you define it) in the city and county.

We are having one of one conversations with many artists and community leaders, we are hosting events and attending events and we are making art in community. There is also a survey and the possibility to have a stakeholder meeting with the designing local team as well.

I encourage everyone to participate and make sure we utilize this process to give feedback about the things that are important to us/you and our communities. How to manage and redistribute resources and who could/should do it? What services and programs are needed ? How has art impacted you? How can art impact others? Etc..

*CALL FOR ART* As I Recall Her: Artists Expand the Legacy of the Douglass Women

RoCo is honored to announce this new juried exhibition inspired by Anna Murray Douglass, Rosetta Douglass Sprague, and Annie Douglass. This is a call to artists of all media and creative practices to submit individual or collaborative works. This exhibition builds upon several other initiatives dedicated to the Douglass Women and it will constitute a collective effort to expand their legacy and inspire the community.

As I Recall Her... is presented in partnership with collaborating organizations @540westmain and @fdfi.roc and will open in March, International Woman’s Month.

We invite submissions of all media related to, or inspired by, the Douglass Women. We welcome artworks that help expand public awareness of these figures within the Douglass family and those that creatively interpret their lives. We also encourage projects that highlight the stories and voices of other Black women who make significant, but overlooked, contributions to the world. We are especially interested in creative and challenging efforts to shift our collective memory, inspire new narratives, center Black women, offer alternative monuments, and invite a deeper understanding of our shared history. This call is NOT limited to portraits.

💫Artist Submissions Due: Sunday, January 22, 5pm
💫Exhibition Opens: Friday, March 3, 2023, 6-9pm
💫Exhibition Dates: March 3 - May 6
