Some details of the connections between our works 🁫

Every day, one more object joined the chain. Today, on the seventh day, all seven are connected into a single sculpture, ending, like a domino line, on an open end.

This weekend is your last chance to see the complete chain. Come visit us before it comes apart!

First day documented

Designing for a space that keeps changing

The exhibition space of How We Play, How We Make was designed by @junfujisaku

built around two ideas: mobility and temporariness.

Over seven days, our objects move, meet and join into a single chain. The space had to move with them. Every element, from the plinths to the lighting and the poster stands, is temporary and mobile: designed to be shifted, rearranged and taken apart as the game unfolds.

Like the relay itself, nothing here is fixed for good.

Very welkom to one of the makers of How We Play, How We Make: @shoo_ohta 🇯🇵

🁫 Relay 6/7: Sho finishes Shun Chih Chang’s object and passes his own to Long Wang Chiang.

Sho Ota is a Japanese designer based in Eindhoven. After six years designing and making wooden furniture in Japan, he moved to the Netherlands and graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven’s Contextual Design MA in 2018, soon opening his own studio. Drawing on his craft background, Sho now makes collectible, one-off pieces, free from the constraints of efficiency. Off the workbench, he has just joined Jun on the pitch on Saturdays ⚽

How We Play, How We Make

17–25 October 2026 · 11:00–18:00
De Fabriek, Baarsstraat 38, Eindhoven · Dutch Design Week 2026

How We Play, How We Make is the second exhibition curated by Absurdity in Making at Dutch Design Week. For Absurdity in Making, the absurd is where making begins: before function, before justification.

This exhibition began as a game. Seven Eindhoven designers and artists, Chai Dienn, Jun Fujisaku, Jung Hoon Koo, Thanos Paspaluaris, Shun Chih Chang, Sho Ota and Long Wang Chiang, take part in a relay borrowed from dominoes. Each maker takes an object to ninety per cent and passes it on; the next finishes the last ten per cent before starting their own.

Alongside the making, each designer was interviewed, documenting the thinking behind every joint. Through these conversations, they shared perspectives, reflections and insights with one another.

Over seven days, the objects join one by one into a single sculpture, ending, like a domino line, on an open end. How We Play, How We Make shows both sides of that process: the objects, and the conversations that shaped them.

How We Play, How We Make
17–25 October 2026 · De Fabriek · Dutch Design Week 2026

This exhibition began as a game. As we made objects, we also documented our own thinking through a short interview with each designer. Along the way, we shared our perspectives, reflections and insights with one another.

How We Play, How We Make shows both sides of that process: the objects, and the conversations that shaped them.

I made the poster for this year’s @dutchdesignweek! In the coming days I‘ll be sharing more about our exhibition How We Play, How We Make.
Seven designers, one chain of objects. Like a game of dominoes, each piece responds to the one before it: a shape, a material, a gesture passed on and answered. Instead of making side by side, we make in sequence, and the process becomes a dialogue.
Come see where the chain led us at De Fabriek, 17–25 October. Cheers!

Particiating Works:
On the Wheel _13 - Sho Ota (@shoo_ohta )

A found slice of tree trunk is shaped using On the Wheel, a self-built, manually operated carving machine. Only the top surface is carved into a tray, while the sides remain untouched. The process creates a specific function within the natural form, leaving the rest of the tree as it was.

Particiating Works:
Surfaced small walshelf - Sho Ota (@shoo_ohta )

Made from leftover blocks from the Surfaced series, this small wall shelf is the final destination for fragments too small for larger works. The project aims to use every piece of wood, carrying unused blocks into the next work. Each shelf takes a unique composition.

Sho's interpretation of alteration is natural and ongoing. Wood splints, lightly stained green, are set right where the chair is damaged, like a scab forming over skin. A delicate touch at the root of each flaw leaves the original shape unharmed. The repairs simply let the chair go on with its history.

Day 1 · Sunday 18 October
Plug-In Paviljoen, Plug-in City, Eindhoven

Chair registration is open until 14 October. Link in bio.
