Well look at that! The new issue of Shoot Magazine is out, featuring an article I wrote about animal photography.

And as a pretty amazing bonus: one of my own images made the cover.

Inside, I share some of my approach to photographing animals: how I work with light, character and expression, and how I try to create portraits that go beyond simply documenting the animal in front of my camera.

Seeing my work featured in the magazine is already something I’m very happy about. Seeing that cheetah staring back at me from the cover makes it even more special.

A big thank you to the team at Shoot for the trust!

From the tiniest creature to the most colossal mammal, each one holds the world together in its own way. Grateful to witness them in their natural habitat, to breathe the same air, to share this one world. Happy World Animal Day.

Celebes crested macaque are critically endangered, social black monkeys with bright orange-brown eyes that roam the forest floor in large daytime troops. Their home is Tangkoko national park in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Unlike many other primates who bare their teeth as a sign of aggression or threat, the crested macaque uses a wide, toothy grin as a reassurance gesture to signal peaceful intentions and de-escalate tension within the group. About this there is a nice story. The Famous “Monkey Selfie”: In 2011, a crested macaque named Naruto took a series of self-portraits using wildlife photographer David Slater’s camera. This triggered a historic multi-year copyright lawsuit led by PETA, which debated whether non-human animals can legally own copyright. Ultimately, US courts ruled that animals cannot hold copyrights. #monkey #sulawesi #macaque #indonesia #criticallyendangered @bbcearth

Craig the Elephant, known globally as the “Gentle Giant” of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, was one of the world’s most famous and beloved “Super Tuskers”. He lived an extraordinary 54-year life, serving as a living symbol of conservation success until he peacefully passed away from natural causes on January 3, 2026. Craig was born in January 1972 to a matriarch named Cassandra. From his youth, his genetics gifted him with exceptionally fast-growing ivory. He eventually grew to weigh around 5,000 kilograms (11,000 lbs) and carried massive, ground-sweeping tusks that weighed over 45 kilograms each. In his final years, many experts believed he was the largest African elephant roaming the planet. #elephant #elephantlove #naturewonder #kenya #gentlegiants
