Despite having lived in Lexington for 2 years, and having moved here for the eventing opportunities, this weekend was my first time competing in Kentucky!

We had an average (for us) dressage test, our best show jump round yet with only 1 rail, and an absolute blast going double clear on cross country.

Starting college challenged me in a lot of ways, and often left little energy for more than some casual work with Corvin. Finally this summer I felt like we were in a good enough spot and I just wanted to get out there again, even if we weren’t going to be improved enough to be competitive. I just wanted to have fun and finally say I got to show at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Thanks to the wonderful support of the Lucky Dog family and any other friends that came to support, we made it happen! It was fun! We finished on a number!

And I can finally say I got to ride cross country at the KHP 🫶🏻

It was so fun but so hot, Corvin felt great thought and we went double clear!

My horse said yes to a lot the other day.

He loaded in a trailer calmly.

He hauled calmly to off property trails.

He hacked for the first time in almost a year both bitless and bridleless and was great.

He let me test fly a drone right above his ears even though he didn’t like it.

He ground tied when I got off.

He loaded in the trailer calmly and easily.

Hauled home quietly.

And unloaded quietly.

Many might read this and think that this isn’t asking for much.

But, asking a Horse to enter a rattly trailer to go to an unknown location, away from their other friends, not knowing when they will return is a big ask.

Taking them somewhere that they don’t know well and asking them to trust where you are asking them to go is a big ask.

So many other things we ask horses to do for us are taken for granted.

So many Horse people have hit a point in their journey where they feel entitled to certain behaviors.

I am so grateful every single time one of my horses trusts me enough to follow me into the trailer.

I am so grateful for every ride and everything that they do for me.

But I, too, used to take it for granted.

I think sometimes we need a reminder of how much these animals actually do for us.

How much of our asks ask them to do things outside of their normal species habits.

Scary things.

And they do them nonetheless.

We could be more appreciative.

Hickory blew me away today. We've been working on getting back into shape for riding. I've been hand walking and doing some light lunging with her a few times a week. Today, I could sense she had some energy to burn, so I asked her to canter for the first time in a very long time. She was on the left lead, which is her stronger side, and obliged me but had some very big feelings about it. She bucked, she kicked, and she crow hopped, but I praised her and urged her to keep trying, and eventually, she settled into a few strides of canter before I clicked and rewarded her for her effort. We switched sides, and I asked her to canter again, this time on the right lead, which is her weaker side. This ask was met with much more resistance. More bucking, bigger crow hops, and only a stride or so of canter here and there in between. I praised her and urged her on, but she didn't settle, and I could see her growing more frustrated, so I asked her to gear down, praised her, and rewarded her for her effort. I told her I understood and that I knew it was hard and that she was trying her best and that I appreciated all the effort she put in for me asking. I could tell she was wary that I was going to ask her again, and I assured her I wouldn't, and we would just walk for now so she could settle down. After she relaxed into the walk, I gently asked for a trot. She picked up the trot and, after a few strides, effortlessly went into a beautiful right lead canter with zero prompting from me. I only let her get a couple of strides in before I clicked and rewarded her and gave her lots of praise. This horse never ceases to amaze me. She is out of shape and imbalanced, so cantering for any length of time is difficult, and she still gave it her all. She would go to the ends of the earth for me if I asked her to. Always be mindful of what you ask of your horses. They will give and give until they can give no more. It's up to us as their caretakers to set appropriate limits and never ask too much. I've been guilty of asking too much from horses in the past on many occasions. Thankfully, I know better now ❤️ #PepsHickorySugar #hearthorse #equinesoulmate #quarterhorsemare #chestnutmare

I promise I'll post all the reels & photos from this weekend soon! I just have to get through work these next couple of days. For now, enjoy this picture taken by @photos_by_elainee on Pilot on course! A rider and horse mid-jump during a cross-country event. The rider leans forward in perfect form, wearing a helmet, protective vest, and beige breeches, while the horse, decked out in matching blue gear, clears a wooden obstacle decorated with flowers. The background features trees, barns, and a well-maintained equestrian facility.

fantastic ride today with racha, it’s crazy to think this time a year ago (tomorrow) I was in the hospital awaiting surgery after a severe fall off this horse. there are so many things in my life right now that I am not proud of, but this horse is not one of them and I cannot be happier to call him my own and have him in my life. cheers to how far we’ve come.
