Arisabel Vasquez is the owner of Slay Everyday, a West Kensington studio boutique and fashion brand known for its exquisite bespoke gowns for proms, weddings, and special occasions, but designing resort wear — like swimsuits with matching cover-ups, maxi dresses, and two-piece sets with wide palazzo pants — is her first love. As someone who’s half Puerto Rican and half Dominican, she says island culture is ingrained in her and she finds building collecting around tropical styles appealing. “I design for all body types and all ages,” she says. “I love working with customers whose sizes are not so common or considered standard; I tell my clients I accentuate their bodies, never covering or camouflaging them.”

My time as magazine editor for Donnelly.Media has unexpectedly come to a close. On the last day of July, I was laid off as managing editor of nine hyperlocal print lifestyle magazines. Although my supervisor told me I elevated the magazines to a level they never even imagined was possible, they decided to eliminate my role as part of workforce consolidation. When I heard the news, all I could think about was what would happen to the stories in process. There was an issue of 08055 magazine that was 85 percent done and my brain was in problem-solving mode, refining the headlines, giving guidance to writers on stories I’d assigned. I wanted to finish the job well. It was a fantastic opportunity while it lasted. Although I was hired to be managing editor of the magazines, a couple days in, they asked if I would edit the stories too. Being the story editor and managing editor for all nine lifestyle magazines — three monthly and six quarterly — was a dream job, my favorite one I’ve had so far. Coming up with story ideas, discovering local businesses, artists, and events to highlight, and most of all, working closely with more than 30 talented freelance writers and photographers was energizing and I’m so grateful I met such glorious folks. I also really believe in the business model. The hyperlocal magazines are advertiser-backed and completely free to read. They’re mailed out to people within a given zip codes and posted online, both in article form and digitally, so readers are free to flip through a magazine and read it in its entirety. I enjoyed playing with different story forms, writing headlines and display text, refining angles for features, introducing an array of story series to particular magazines, including one for Haddonfield that demystified unusual professions (featuring @theeperfect_sale, @southjk9, @pure.couturehaddonfield, and Sarah Tambussi of the Historical Society of Haddonfield) and a weekend routine column with creative people in Fishtown, and producing polished stories designed to appeal to the casual reader and to entertain and delight them. Magazines should be a source of pleasure and I hope under me they were. Thank you to all!
