A few thoughts:

- The majority of every outfit is thrifted, consigned, vintage, or online second hand. I don’t really care to dress/look like everyone else so one of the reasons I love shopping secondhand is for the unique pieces. While I may not have many links to share with y’all, maybe you draw inspo from the pairings and silhouettes!

- Jewelry stacking and layering can do a lot to pull an otherwise “basic” outfit together…I’m taking VH1 rap music video level layering

- So can a great haircut (s/o @dhiranmistryhair & @kaitlinjay_hair)…having short hair requires more styling, but once you get comfy with it, it doesn’t take long at all and I swear the bob feels like an outfit component of its own.

- One of the reasons I’ve grown so confident in exploring and discovering my style is because I was blessed with a sister who’s an UNREAL stylist. She specializes in purging/organizing your closet and expanding your wardrobe by styling you with what you already have. There’s not enough space in this caption’s character limit to adequately summarize how worthwhile her time is but if you live in the Denver, CO area and are currently living in an “I fucking hate everything I wear” phase, I recommend jumping into @lillychristman’s DMs 🙃

- You probably follow me for the nutrition/fitness content but fuck it, I post what I want! Style and secondhand hunting is something I consider a hobby and it’s really fun for me to share it with you all :)

DRESS UP LESSONS: ✍️ A Note from our Publisher | September Style Issue

“When you’re wearing a cape, you’re gonna behave differently.” —André Leon Talley

My oldest daughter, Lily, is a budding stylist, and her little sister, Caroline, is her favorite subject. Lily spends hours dreaming up hairstyles and scouring the house for bows, pins and accessories to doll up “her baby.” Then she pieces together looks from our embarrassingly large dress-up collection, names them, and snaps a Polaroid. The result? A 4-year-old delighted with whoever her new style has made her become—mermaid, princess, or an eccentric wig-wearing lady named Candy.

I felt that same magic this spring when Maria, owner of Eternal—the luxury consignment boutique in Myers Park—styled me for a Queen City Lifestyle event. As a working mother of three, personal style often gets shoved down the priority list. But Maria pushed me outside my comfort zone: a sheer Isabel Marant blouse in an abstract feather print, paired with buttery-yellow silky cargo joggers and a fringe collar necklace. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see a working mom barely holding on—I saw a publisher and editor-in-chief.

Lily and Maria know the same secret: the right look doesn’t just change how you appear, it changes who you believe you can be.

Our September Style issue marks two years of Queen City Lifestyle magazine. This month we feature local artist and rising international star Kenny Nguyen, preview the Judith Leiber exhibition coming to the Mint Museum in October, and step inside a maximalist Gucci lover’s dressing room—designed by Karsen Hood—for our cover feature, The Jewel Box.

We couldn’t celebrate two years without thanking our amazing partners for their support and community impact. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Cheers to two years of style 🥂,
Liz
