Wow. Shifting Gears. I really built that! I don’t think the kids who showed up this summer will ever understand what they gave me in return. I don’t think I’ll ever fully process that. What started as a little idea in my head turned into a summer full of memories, friendships, and kids asking when we were coming back. To some people that might not seem like much, but to me it means EVERYTHING. A lot of you have watched me grow up, and you know why this hits so close to home. I can’t go back and change the childhood I had, but at 18 years old I got to create something bigger than myself. Something that gives kids a place to belong, people who believe in them, and a better path than the one that led me to incarceration. I’m beyond blessed and thankful for everyone who helped make our first summer possible. I started Shifting Gears hoping to make a difference in these kids’ lives, never realizing just how much they’d make a difference in mine. 🧡

Our first summer of Shifting Gears is officially in the books.

A few years ago, I was the kid people were trying to figure out how to help. This summer, I found myself standing on a basketball court watching a bunch of young people enjoy something I created.

I don’t even really know how to put that feeling into words yet.

Earlier this year Shifting Gears was literally just an idea in my head. The passion behind it started long before that though. I think it started the first time I watched a jail cell door shut behind me.

It took me a few years, a lot of mistakes, a lot of growing & unfortunately losing someone I loved to finally find the purpose behind everything I went through.

This summer became phone calls on lunch breaks, picking up pizzas after work, spending money I probably should’ve saved, loading tables and coolers into cars, staying up way too late planning events and trying to figure shit out as I went.

But I’d do it all over again.

I watched kids who didn’t know each other become friends. I watched businesses and people in the community ask how they could help. I watched kids start coming up to me just to talk about life. And somehow through an entire summer of bringing all these different personalities & at-risk youth together, we didn’t have one fight at an event.

I wish Dominic could’ve seen it.

A lot of Shifting Gears exists because losing him made me realize how quickly somebody can be here and then just not be here anymore. I can’t change what happened to him or everything I did when I was younger. But I can decide what I do with all of it now.

I’m beyond grateful for every kid who showed up, every parent who trusted us, every business that supported us, every volunteer, every photographer and everybody who believed in this before there was much to believe in.

We didn’t do everything perfectly. I learned a lot and there’s a lot I want to do better.

But right now I’m just thankful.

Our first summer is officially over.

Shifting Gears isn’t. 🧡

Safe to say, we’ve been having a fun time :)

The beautiful part about making a movie with your best friends is that it never really feels TOO stressful, as long as go with the flow.
