SANKOFA: Dreams of the Past

We have been here before.

The Akan tribe of Ghana understands this. Their word “Sankofa” loosely translates to “Go back and get it”, more directly meaning “It is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind”. In a nation that has brought back the banning of books and where literacy rates are egregiously low in certain regions it is evermore important that we remember the wisdom left by those who came before us.

With this shoot I wanted to remind my community that many of us have the same roots, our ancestors brought here against their will. Even those of immigrant heritage are forced into the same racial power structure as African Americans the moment they arrive on these shores. Oftentimes our community gets divided. I’d like to stop for a moment and emphasize that much of the time this division is sown by outside actors, and it benefits them as well. From recent examples like Foundational Black Americans and The Shaderoom, to older ones such as COINTELPRO and the fostering of gang violence by the federal government, two things have remained true. We have been oppressed and we have persisted.

No matter what has been thrown at us we have walked out, maybe scathed, but certainly wiser.

What may be unbeknownst to you is that we are constantly constantly surrounded by Sankofa symbolism here in America as well. The metalworking on many door grates features the symbol, often repeated.

Many African cultures have ironworking traditions, often passed down from father to son, so many enslaved Africans brought to the current-day United States during chattel slavery were blacksmiths. Once freed, these same artisans continued to represent their heritage in their ironwork, with the Sankofa heart now being a staple of residential American architecture. With most African Americans being able to trace their roots back to West Africa it is no surprise that we see the region’s iconography so often here.

We built this nation. Allow the Sankofa hearts around you to be a reminder of the strength and resilience of our people.
