Starview Comics started as my father’s childhood dream.

Growing up in Chicago, comics and reading were what kept him off the streets.

Now fast forward to today, where here I am, his 22-year-old son, carrying that legacy forward and proudly publishing my first comic issue under the Starview banner: SCOUNDRELS #1.

Last week, my first ever issue as a comic writer officially released to the public, and to be honest, it’s everything I’ve ever wanted.   Before I ever picked up a camera or knew what a screenplay was, I was the kid in the back of the class spending more time doodling in my notebook instead of paying attention to the teacher.

Comics were my true gateway into storytelling.

That’s why getting to celebrate the launch of SCOUNDRELS #1 with our first signing was so special. For once, I got to take a step back from the pursuit of getting this story told, look around, and really appreciate just how far I’ve come as an artist— and how far we’ve come as a team.

I’m incredibly thankful to the Starview Comics team for their resilience, trust, ability to adapt throughout each phase of bringing this story to the comic medium.

My co-founder and lead artist for SCOUNDRELS, @j.vidal_ , was monumental in bringing my vision to life, and he absolutely crushed it. Not only did he capture the spirit of the original project but added his own style and flair to truly make something better than I could’ve imagined.

Our art director, @okieoliv , played a critical role in introducing this project, and Starview Comics as a whole, to the world. She guided our organic marketing efforts and helped steer us toward an incredibly successful social media growth campaign surrounding the launch.

I’m equally thankful to Dreamscape Publishing for seeing what SCOUNDRELS could be and taking a chance on us; giving us the platform, resources, and reach to turn this story into something tangible.

Four years ago, SCOUNDRELS was the idea of an overly ambitious film student.

Last week, I got to sit at a table and sign copies of it.

That’s pretty insane.

Next stop: ISSUE 2!

THAT’S RELEASE.

Four years ago, I created SCOUNDRELS as an outlet for all the anxieties I had around ambition, finances, and expectations.

Little did I know, the process of getting that story told would become the crucible where I’d have to face those same anxieties head-on.

I’ve been blessed to experience a lot and learn even more along the way. Through all of it, SCOUNDRELS became something much bigger than the story itself. It became the catalyst for me finding my spark as an artist.

Major shoutout to the best partner I could’ve asked for on this journey, @j.vidal_ . From the beginning, he understood the mission and worked tirelessly to add life to a world that, for so long, only existed in my head.

And now, after four years, I finally get to pull back the curtain and let you all into what that work has become.

Every great crime story needs a villain—and Don Santino isn't interested in pretending to be anything else.

In this clip, writer Blair Harris and artist João Vidal break down the design philosophy behind one of the most important characters in SCOUNDRELS. While Santino presents himself as a disciplined businessman and leader of the Keystone Syndicate, João wanted subtle visual contradictions that reveal who he really is.

Character design is one of our favorite parts of building this world because every small choice tells a story long before a character even speaks.
