Meet the Artist: Charron Andrews
Mixed media, reused materials
OCAG Open Studio Tour
Both weekends – Studio 64 – Chapel Hill

Charron Andrews is a self-taught artist and physical therapist. She took the first unconscious steps toward a creative life when she became a childhood alley picker in her Detroit neighborhood. But it wasn't until she was nearly 50 that she started making art out of things that other people would consider trash.

Growing up in a big Catholic family, she never felt especially religious, but did associate her church with her home, her neighborhood, her family, and her developing female identity. Those images from her early life often find their way into her creations. One of the strongest pleasures of her childhood was the time spent wandering around the alleys of her neighborhood, finding discarded things and bringing them home to a new life.

In her art she continues this practice by using mostly things found in an alley, on the street, in a thrift shop or in her own trash. She sees that all broken things can have a renewed expressive life if given a chance. Charron is always quite happy when something, the uglier the better, that has been waiting around for years in boxes and shelves of refuse, finally finds its way into just the right place in a piece of art.

Her most recent work is a combination of mosaic, collage, and assemblage made of materials common in everyday life like bottle caps, belts, images from books and magazines, broken jewelry, clothing, and tin containers. She combines them together with paint, nails, and glue to make art that is mysterious and wonderful.

Snapshots over a week in the Gallery. I think a photo is by @tastho but am unsure so didn’t tag it. (She’s donated several great photos.) That assemblage by @shrinemaker was adopted quickly; I’m glad I got to see it. I know lots of art passes through the gallery before I see it, so here’s a general thanks to all.

New art in the Gallery and it’s not all from my stash! A friend made three fabulous ‘Make Your Own Beeded Art’ kits—-here’s the first one. I hope the person who takes it will share photos of their project. A local artist who often leaves drawings and paintings in the gallery has been extra generous lately; I should know who it is, but can’t recall. Please comment if those 3 pieces are yours so I can thank you. I may need a translation of the written card—what do you think when you read it? If you are in the area, come by to see what’s different — it changes every day. #gratitude #freelittleart gallery #carrboronc

Here are a few days in the Gallery. Most of these are by anonymous artists except for the Van Gogh magnet and a wonderful shrine by @shrinemaker who has also repaired and shingled the roof of the gallery! I’m puzzled that someone removed the line I strung along the top along with the mini clothespins to clip small pieces; I replaced it today and hope it will remain. I’m loving the little watercolors and appreciate all who leave art for others to enjoy.

A week in the Gallery: Photos by @rugbymouth, prints by @sail1942, a print of a collage by Susan Neulist, a spring photo by Kerri Bossman, a tiny can of Vernors Ginger Ale all the way from Detroit (where I once drank gallons of the stuff) from @takeatiny, one of my collages and a wonderful piece by @shrinemaker I don’t usually want printed material in the gallery but the flyers for the @uproarfestnc fit our mission and I hope everyone in the area will visit. Thank you all!
