This mural is about experiencing Matoba through the eyes of a traveler. I wanted to create a character who isn’t just passing through, but somebody who slows down, takes it all in, and appreciates the community around them.
The landscape brings together elements that make Matoba and Kawagoe special, including the rivers, fields, bridges, local plant life such as rice fields and sweet potato , and the Bell Tower standing in the distance. The large red sun representing warmth, energy, and the connection between the people and Matoba .
One of my favorite details is the basketball in the lower corner. While I was painting I kept hearing kids and basketballs bouncing from the nearby court. That sound became part of the neighborhood. After learning about the @st_kasumi.exe basketball team, I wanted to give them a little love. It’s a small detail, but it came from a real experience I had while I was there.
As an artist from Hawaiʻi with roots in Chicago’s graffiti culture, I wasn’t trying to paint a postcard version of Japan. I wanted to paint something that felt real. Something that reflected the everyday atmosphere, movement, and spirit of Matoba through my own eyes.

I want to show love to everyone who made this project possible. Thank you to Shutaku and the entire team for welcoming us into your community. Huge thanks to Yoshi San and Dell for going way above and beyond to make this project happen. It was also an honor to paint alongside @markotattoos and Gavin Murai @reckonshop and bring this wall to life together.
A special thank you to my wife, @kaorijoe, and my in-laws for all their love and support. This project meant even more because Kaori’s family has deep roots in Saitama, so being able to leave a piece of my work here made this experience incredibly personal for all of us.
Thank you, Matoba, for welcoming me with open arms. Much love from Hawaiʻi by way of Chicago. Straight up!! 🤙🏽🇯🇵❤️✨
