Another along the theme of “pics I took this year but the state of the world discouraged me to post.” Today, to celebrate @parallels.nj new single, “A Portrait of Justin Burgos.”

In September, as part of my ongoing documentary about Misery, I had Justin come to the studio to do another in my ongoing series of interviews. You’ll note a distinct similarity to what I did for Baby Chaos but with a bit of a twist.

For this one I Keyed with my favorite unit, the Sky Panel 360 with a slip on soft box and LCD to reduce spill. A floppy sider keeps it off the cyc walls. The walls themselves I lit with, despite my many complaints about them, dueling Vortex 8s. I put them each on a 90° Jr adapter so the eye of the fixture was in line with the wall and would naturally wrap batter. For an edge light I menaced out an Arri L5-C. I love the L series for their color consistency and compatibility with the rest of the Arri system but they are quite heavy for how bright they’re not. There’s better choices, in terms of function, on the market now but I feel like Arri doesn’t get the appreciation they deserve for being innovators and early pioneers. They got beat out by being too early to the market and, inevitably, too precious about build quality so I use them when I can because they deserve respect. Finally a 4X bead gave us the touch of fill. The interview itself was shot on an FX6 and FX9 I borrowed from Ben Knight and Chris Liquori respectively with Iron Glass Primes.

Unfortunately Misery elected to disintegrate before I could edit my interviews together but… that’s life. I’m sure another application for the footage will present itself in due time ;)

We filmed this in Studio 3 at Red Sky in Boston. The same place I filmed Baby Chaos’s interview and the music video “Casey” for Misery. That’s that same room being used as set-dec prep. Versatile right? You can rent it through PeerSpace or by calling Mark for a chat.

I’ve known Justin in one capacity or another for a few years at this point both as guitarist of Misery and the front man of Parallels. The last two photos are from the video I made for Parallels new song DNCR. Keep an eye peeled for its forthcoming release.

I am so lucky to have had an opportunity to create with my friend @llynksmusic . When I shot her album cover we bonded a bit on heartache and life. I had said I would love to make a music video for you someday. That day came faster than expected.

The concept for this video was something that was just taking up space in my brain for ten years. I have had a lot of ideas come and go but this one never left. Back then I was going through a major long term breakup. It showed me new levels of depression and anxiety I don’t wish on anyone. It was also the first time I ever experienced rumination. My head kept feeling in a spin cycle, repeating conversations and memories. I was in a downward spiral. I did not know what was up or down or how to make it stop. After therapy and learning what was happening I wanted to change my heartache into art. I kept seeing a woman stuck in a storm in my head. A very simple analogy of what was happening but the visual was so vivid to me.

Llynks song is about an alien telling a human they don’t deserve anything because humans destroy everything. It was such a perfect song to carry the same theme of destruction in a video. We came up with a pretty good quote to combine both concepts: “Amid the storm we’ve created, can we survive our own destruction.” It can be seen as an internal destruction of negative thoughts. As well as the external destruction humanity does to one another. Weathering the storm as a symbol of the inner and outer destruction we all endure. I am grateful the art has been made. My next post will be my love letter to the crew who helped it all come together!

Full video link in BIO.

Llynks is about to go on tour THIS WEEK! So please go see her perform, she will not disappoint. She will be in Ithaca NY on the 6th. Philly the 11th. and NYC the 12th. Tickets available at www.llynksmusic.com and give her album a listen! It’s incredible. From start to finish you’ll have the volume all the way up. All bangers.
