🪷 How Durga Puja Started? 🪷

The Slaying of Mahishasura:
According to the Devi Mahatmyam (part of the Markandeya Purana), the gods combined their divine energies to create Goddess Durga. Armed with powerful weapons, she fought and defeated the invincible buffalo demon king, Mahishasura, symbolizing the eternal victory of good over evil.

Lord Rama’s Lord Akalbodhan:
Mythologically, Durga Puja was originally celebrated in the spring as Basanti Puja. However, according to the 15th-century Krittivasi Ramayana, Lord Rama performed an untimely awakening (Akalbodhan) of the goddess in the autumn to seek her blessings before his battle against Ravana. This set the tradition of the autumnal (Sharadiya) Durga Puja celebrated today.

Today, the festival has transcended its religious origins to become one of the world's largest public art exhibitions, earning a spot on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
