If nightclub licencing moved its focus away from enforcing drugs towards reducing harms, clubs could reallocate security efforts and resources away from cracking down on the people who aren’t causing any harm to themselves or others. It could instead focus more on the small minority of people who do need help. That would be moving from a “zero tolerance” approach to “zero harm” approach – with education reigning supreme.

In the early 1980s, artist Keith Haring created hundreds of drawings in the New York subway system. He used chalk to paint on unused advertising space, which was covered with black sheets of paper.

He was caught and fined numerous times, but he continued to bring art to the masses, for the price of a Subway ticket. Watching him work is mesmerising. He attracts onlookers but barely acknowledges them—as long as he’s working, he barely hesitates at all. In the years leading up to his tragic death at the age of thirty-one, the crowds kept getting bigger, but his process stayed the same: steady hand, monastic concentration, muscle memory acting as his muse.

In the 1990s, a small underground record label, Brain Records, pioneered use of 8-bit technology which went on to shape the UK hardcore and jungle scenes. roughcast went to the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, situated in the Uni of Greenwich, to find out how.

The exhibition––Trackers and Breakbeats: Celebrating Brain Records’ Underground Revolution––is on until the 2nd November. It’s curated by Rendezvous Projects with Bizzy B, DJ Dlux, and Jon Weinel. The Parking Lot Movie (2010) is an absurd documentary. But in a brilliant way. Directed by Meghan Eckman, it follows a group of artistic and overeducated car park attendants who work at The Corner Parking Lot in Virginia. The job has been passed around a group of friends, primarily students at the nearby University of Virginia, and mostly majoring in Liberal Arts subjects such as Philosophy or Anthropology.

Filmed over a three-year period, from 2007 to 2010, the crew interviewed at least 21 people associated with the parking lot, including owner Chris Farina, current attendants, and former attendants.

As they deal with drunken, rude, and cheap customers, it gives them the opportunity, while working there, to examine aspects of the human condition in terms of societal norms and values, as well as to refine their own personal philosophy of life. As the attendants wage a weird war against the people who park in their car park, the mix of absurdism and intellectualism is enthralling.

The Sociology Behind the Documentary That ‘People Just Do Nothing’ Was Based On

To me, one of the best ever documentaries about UK urban culture was Towerblock Dreams. Investigating underground garage, the emerging grime scene, and pirate radio culture, on council estates in London and Southend, it was broadcast in three parts on BBC Three in 2004.

A lot of people say that the characters in People Just Do Nothing are based on those featured in Towerblock Dreams. The show was filmed on council estates in Southend and parts of London (including Tottenham, Finsbury Park, Bow and Archway), by directors David O’Neill and Adam Smith.

“I was held up at gunpoint for my motorcycle, which sparked an interest in the lives of young people growing up in touching distance,” O’Neill says, explaining how the project came about. “You can’t gain access to that world through the front door, so Adam and I agreed that musical ambition was the better route.” The BBC commissioned the series in 2001 and filming began.

Towerblock Dreams looked at inner-city life, through the stories of young musicians trying to lift themselves out of poverty using a career in music as a vehicle. After its release on BBC Three, Towerblock Dreams drew criticism from some quarters for allegedly glamorising illegal behaviour like dealing.

But for me, that’s rubbish. This is pure sociology. These are really bright, intelligent, talented guys – for a man who never finished school, Skinnyman, for instance, is so articulate. But for one reason or another, they just didn’t make it through the school system. They were no longer part of mainstream society, they were socially marginalised and excluded.
