We had the pleasure of getting an exclusive preview of the "Sangi Footwear Observatory," the ultimate evolution of what originally began as the @lookatsangi digital archive. The project—a comprehensive digital footwear observatory—promises to narrow the gap between between three core audiences: enthusiasts, professionals, brand and the industry. It places in-depth technical information just a click away, offering detailed footwear profiles across a vast array of products (currently over 2,500). Carefully curated by the founder's discerning eye since the page's inception, this database ensures that enthusiasts have abundant material to study and explore. Simultaneously, industry insiders gain fast, intuitive access to a massive archive for research and project development. This seamless navigation is powered by the platform's proprietary AI and a system of "constellations," where pieces are grouped by shared specifications. This technology streamlines the search process, allowing users to find specific products using simple keywords that align, for instance, with the mood of a project currently in development. The founder stated that the Footwear Observatory will not merely be an interactive archive, but a true central hub for the entire Sangi ecosystem. It features dedicated sections such as "MAGAZINE" for news, interviews, and exclusive insights; "LAB," which showcases work extending beyond the SANGI brand, including brand consulting, external product development, and R&D experimentation; and "Physical Archive," an in-person, consultable collection of products gathered over years of study, research, and development. It is with profound gratitude to @akross.world for introducing two silhouettes: the XA-01 and the MOA Traxion Black. These are two models that share similar intentions but differ fundamentally in their execution. The XA-01 ("Como Island" edition) is a fun shoe that brings joy to both the observer and the wearer. Through a cleverly curated color palette, Akross has successfully merged an outdoor aesthetic with everyday wearability. The XA-01 features a hybrid lacing system, comprising an external lace that runs along the side panels, webbing straps, and classic eyelets. This is complemented by an upper crafted from a rich variety of materials, including a mesh tongue and an alternating mix of leather and canvas throughout the rest of the shoe. Despite this multitude of materials and shapes, Akross avoids being ostentatious. The branding is neither invasive nor repetitive, but rather blends naturally into the design. Furthermore, the combination of a well-cushioned midsole and a durable Vibram outsole provides the confidence to comfortably traverse any surface. Conversely, the MOA Traxion Black opts for a fully synthetic upper, a toggle lacing system, and a proprietary Akross sole. While the XA-01 boasts a playful design reminiscent of Alessandro Mendini, the Traxion leans toward a distinct, sporty elegance.  Thanks to its tapered silhouette and a simple yet effective interplay of materials, specifically the semi-rigid plastic overlays paired with a hexagonal mesh pattern, it stands out as an unprecedented product on the market. The Traxion's design flows seamlessly, elevated by subtle details such as the colored embroidery securing the heel webbing, a metal plate, a dual-lug outsole, and, once again, understated branding. It presents itself as a model fully capable of handling tough terrains. However, when paired with the right attire, its shape and aesthetic make it a compelling alternative to classic footwear. Anyone who appreciates footwear as a whole should keep a close eye on Akross. The best Luka since the 2. And it’s not particularly close. For the first time on a Luka, Nike went with a full-length Zoom Strobel. Paired with Cushlon 3.0 underneath, the midsole setup delivers something the line hasn’t quite had before, a real plushness without sacrificing propulsion. The step-in feel is immediate. The response on court follows instinctively. Lateral containment is dialed. The plastic sidewall elements and bootie liner work together to keep your foot planted through cuts and direction changes. Support is there without feeling restrictive. A couple of things worth noting. The top eyelet near the bootie is missing, so a runner’s knot isn’t an option if you need that extra heel lockdown. A lateral flange would’ve also strengthened the stability story. Small omissions, but worth knowing before you buy. Still, the Luka 5 delivers where it counts.
