Ryan Clark experienced these sickle cell trait complications due to playing in a high altitude — lower oxygen levels. @realrclark

Clark is an advocate for sickle cell awareness and created an organization called Ryan Clark's Cure League, which is dedicated to developing new and effective therapies for sickle cell disease.⁠

Side note: Congrats to Ryan on his most recent multi year extension with ESPN. Continue to be a great champion and advocate for the sickle cell community.

In 2010, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) implemented one of the largest mandated genetic screening programs in the U.S. including universal sickle cell trait (SCT) screening of all Division I student-athletes.⁠

Miles Davis was diagnosed with #sicklecell disease in 1961 at the age of 35.

In exerpts from his autobiography he shares, "by now I was in a lot of pain all the time from what I found out was sickle-cell anemia, which was causing arthritis in my joints, especially in my left hip joint... I was sick and tired of going in and out of hospitals and hobbling around, on and off stage. I was beginning to see pity in people's eyes when they looked at me... I couldn't stand that ****, man."

"Only 5% of White House petitions are able to achieve 100,000 signatures." Six months ago social media literally came together to help Lilah and the Sickle Cell community. I just want to remind you guys once again how forever grateful we are for having helped us when we needed it the most. What was a simple signature to everyone meant the world to us.
