Jaewon Kim (b. 1987 in Seoul) explores the complex
interrelations between nature, technology, and human agency. His artistic practice is rooted in ecological questions and reflects on the fragility of the systems that sustain life, as well as the consequences of human intervention in the natural world.
A recurring subject in Kim’s work is the honeybee – a species whose decline has
become emblematic of the vulnerability of ecological balance. Prompted by his
observations of bee die-offs and his engagement with issues such as climate
change and the widespread use of pesticides, Kim has developed a visual
language that merges scientific inquiry with digital processes and traditional
craftsmanship.
For his works, the artist gathers visual material related to bees and plants such as lavender, creating digital models that are subsequently translated into drawings, reliefs, and sculptural installations. His practice incorporates technologies such as drawing machines and computer-assisted procedures. Yet the final outcome of each work remains intentionally open-ended: the characteristics of the materials, subtle shifts in the production process, and the interaction between artist and
machine introduce unexpected variations and disruptions.
It is precisely this unpredictability that lies at the core of Kim’s interest. His works exist within the tension between control and chance, technological precision and organic autonomy. In doing so, they suggest that complex systems – whether ecological, technological, or social – can never be fully controlled.
Lavender, another recurring motif in Kim’s practice, refers not only to its significance as an important food source for pollinators but also to its long-standing cultural and therapeutic associations. Rather than focusing solely on the outward appearance of his subjects, Kim approaches them as carriers of layered meanings and
interconnected relationships.
Through this process, his works offer a poetic reflection on the fragile entanglement of human existence, technological development, and the natural environment.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
LILI SÜPER

Lili Süper (@lili.sueper ) is a multimedia artist working between London and Hamburg. Coming from theatre, she has learned to place the body and its expression at the centre of her work. It gets reconstructed, it performs, melts with its surroundings, or is questioned through technology.

“I met very intelligent and generous people who where eager to understand art in the context of the Anthropocene. They taught me to situate my practice within an academic tradition of knowledge that combines ambitious postcolonial thinking with a radical understanding of matter and body.”

Work pictured:
Her solo exhibition, ‘THE SERVICE’, ran until January at the ‘Siddiq Projects’ gallery. In this she combined an interactive performance with life-sized sculptures and knitted satellite imagery to explore the way technological gazes shape landscape.

Siddiq Projects @siddiqprojects (Hamburg)
General program | SWAB 2025

Featuring works from @jw_jaewonkim

Founded in late 2023, Siddiq Projects is a multidisciplinary exhibition space in Hamburg Germany with a focus on emerging artists from Europe and abroad. Aiming to provide a platform to varied positions, it serves as a catalyst for dialogue, cultural exchange and artistic autonomy.

For Swab 2025, Siddiq Projects proposes a solo presentation by Hamburg- based, Korean artist Jaewon Kim.
A focus on sculptural works and works on paper that draw attention to fragile ecosystems and threats of the 21st century.
‘Cross-Pollination’ is an innuendo on the analog-digital approach the artist has; but furthermore it is an allusion on the double edged sword that is our attitude towards ecological systems which are threatened by modern agriculture and humanities negligence towards this most vulnerable part of our existence. His practice aims to open up new perspectives, makes the fleeting tangible and sheds a light on hidden aspects of our surroundings.

Siddiq Projects @siddiqprojects will participate in the General program.

They will present the project of the artist: @jw_jaewonkim

Siddiq Projects is a gallery and multidisciplinary exhibition space with a focus on emerging artists from Europe and abroad. Aiming to provide a platform to varied positions, it serves as a catalyst for dialogue, cultural exchange and artistic autonomy.

Jaewon Kim, a Hamburg-based artist educated in Hamburg and Seoul, explores the balance between humanity, technology, and nature in his work Cross-Pollination. Combining digital tools with materials like porcelain, ceramics, ink, and pen, he creates tangible works that reveal hidden details of life while reflecting on ecological fragility and the tension between precision and imperfection.

POOR IMAGES
On view @siddiqprojects until May 24, 2025

with: Dayana Matasheva & Edson Niebla (us), Deanna Havas, John DeSousa, and Tasneem Sarkez

POOR IMAGES presents works on canvas and moving image to question ideas around the evolution of painting as a medium historically tasked with recording reality—from painting to photography to cinema and now AI, the way this art form has evolved to free the image from the onus of reality has opened it up to icondules and iconoclasts alike, the exiled poets and peddlers, the witches, the diabolical, and the anathemic at the edge of the settlement, all in defence of the poor image.

Today, this question of the ontological identity of model and image hardly subsided–ever-advancing imaging technologies are met with increased deviation from the picture-perfect. Text-to-image generative AI is undergoing "model collapse" due to a recursive process in which models are training on content generated by earlier versions of themselves, losing the ability to accurately represent the world, and giving rise to an inbred mutant with exaggerated, grotesque features.

Before the AI Slop of melting faces and extra fingers, this primordial hallucinatory chaos was found in the works of painters like Hieronymus Bosch of the Early Netherlandish School. A phantasmagoria beyond meaning, which places art in the realm of the nonhuman, it employs a type of communication closer to quantum phenomena, or dream, or the unintelligible speech of angels, even.

Paintings are a slice of life, emphasized. A moment and a mood isolated, slowed, and reverbed. The canvas floats like clouds in a hypnagogic state. The hand moves through time and space, analog imprints of the heart's activity. From one swath to the other, a fleeting synthesis. In this instant, the painter - an artisan in trance - applies a pan and scan film editing technique, cropping parts of the original scene to heighten the composition's most potent aspects. A feeling, reified. A sound, evoked. An image, in movement. A new mix of temporalities frozen.

The Numinous unfolds between two gestures borrowed from filmmaking: the suspended pause before "action," and the frustrating exit after "cut."

Here, only the second remains.
The first scenes — omitted — held their breath at the nervous anticipation of performance, charged with a fragile, almost religious tension — not spiritual, but the kind that inhabits secular spaces, pregnant with ceremonial expectation.

What is pictured now is the aftermath.
The lights have dimmed. The atmosphere has darkened — not just literally, but thematically: a collapse of ceremony into something absolutely feral. The death of God?

Figures drift through nighttime scenes where morality has failed. Criminality, prostitution, predation. Wild animals brush past human bodies. Yet literally nothing's happening. The performance is over. Cut.

What remains are the costumes, the makeup, the frustration of a failed performance — hints of a spectacle we missed.
