“RSS Out of NYC”, “Hindutva Out of NYC” and “India Belongs to Everyone” were among the slogans raised by protesters outside Madison Square Garden in New York on August 29, as RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed a major gathering of Indian-American and interfaith groups. The protest was organised by Hindus for Human Rights and allied organisations, with Muslim, Sikh and Christian groups and other advocacy organisations also participating.

Bhagwat’s New York visit included two separate events. Earlier on August 29, he participated in the “One World, One Humanity” Faith Leaders’ Conference, which brought together religious leaders from Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism for discussions centred on interfaith dialogue, unity and shared humanity.

Later, he was the keynote speaker at the “Universal Oneness Celebration” at Madison Square Garden, organised by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) Forum. The event was presented by organisers as a celebration of Hindu philosophy, diversity, interfaith harmony and the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – the world as one family. Around 5,000 people were expected to attend.

At the Faith Leaders’ Conference, Bhagwat said: “If any Hindu thinks that there should be no Muslim in Bharat, he will not remain Hindu.” He also spoke about the idea that different faiths may follow different paths while sharing a common humanity.

His appearance at MSG, however, drew significant opposition in New York, including from 61 organisations that said the RSS does not represent their vision of Hinduism or India.

Behind the scenes covering the Taylor Swift @taylorswift wedding for @ndtv @ndtvworld with @sidkejriwal : On a day when temps soared above 100°F, we started around 11 a.m. in blazing sunshine and wrapped close to 10 p.m., after getting caught in a thunderstorm that many Swifties considered a blessing. :)

In 25 years as a journalist, this was my first time covering a wedding. But for me, the wedding wasn’t the headline. The question I explored all day was: What is it about Taylor Swift that inspires such extraordinary loyalty?

The conversations pointed to something interesting. People spoke about how openly she shares heartbreak & vulnerability, while also embodying ambition, confidence and success. For many fans, that combination feels deeply authentic—and perhaps that’s why they’ve stayed with her through every era.

I’m not a Swiftie, but I did have one Taylor Swift song on repeat for a while in 2023: “Karma.” :) Karma btw is far more than just simplistic good & bad actions & consequences, longer topic for later! :)

Another thing I found fascinating: this weekend, the Taylor Swift Travis Kelce nuptials have drawn more attention than another even bigger story unfolding across the U.S.: the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence from Britain. More thoughts on that over the weekend! :)
If you’d like to see my reports outside @thegarden - you can find my NDTV coverage on YouTube and across NDTV’s social media channels. :)

My first semester @columbia.sipa has officially ended, and when everyone is traveling home for vacations, you find yourself bringing the taste of home to NYC for those who can’t.💔
Hosted this end-of-semester lunch for friends and received so much love—especially for Dal Baati with Lehsun Chutney. After serving it with such authentic flavors, I think I’ve officially qualified to be Rajasthani đŸ˜‚â€ïž
