For Freja Sofie Kirk’s new solo exhibit ‘Pastimes’ at @overgaden_

I feel lucky to have friends whose work can resonate on so many levels. More so to be able to contribute to what I believe is one of my friend Freja’s most defining works to date.

Filmed by @frejaersofie and @sidselfilipsen deep in the interior of Canada, the project coincidentally resonated with my own family history. A place many fellow Canadians I know have never been, where my mother spent an elusive chapter of her life. Of which I know little about.

In the video work, the ancient war trick of falling from the saddle pretending to die—a stunt that has become a staple of North American rodeo shows—is performed by a female professional trick rider, filmed close-up.

I helped further suspend these moments, stretching them beyond reality.

My new film, THE REVOLUTION AGAINST DEATH, comes to CPH:DOX this week.

A faded resort of plaster rococo, turquoise pools, gilt and chintz.
A thousand people gather to declare a revolution against aging and death.
Fear is in the air — of nonbeing, disease and pain,
of being regarded as old or, worse, no longer being regarded at all.

When my beloved Shu was a boy, he learned a Buddhist teaching on impermanence —
he shared it with me when he saw how haunted I'd become:

It is our nature to grow old.
It is our nature to get sick.
It is our nature to lose the people we love.
It is our nature to die.
How, then, shall we live?

THE REVOLUTION AGAINST DEATH is my poem about mortality, fear, longing, and wonder.

I am moved to bring it to you.

Screenings at CPH:DOX 2026:
18 March at 21:45 — Empire Bio, Nørrebro
21 March at 19:00 — Kunsthal Charlottenborg
