🐠🧬🐡🐙💻 We pack a lot of SCIENCE into each of boat trip to the coral reefs. Here is one team returning from dives off Tektite reef in St. John, US Virgin Islands. Our trips include cross training between technicians, students, post-docs and principal investigators with expertise in biology, chemistry, physics, acoustics, engineering, robotics and computer science. This week I joined the @unoceandecade conference in Barcelona with @sealegacy. Focused on ‘delivering the #science we need for the ocean we want’, it brought together the global Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate and take stock of progress, and set joint priorities for the future. It is weird to join so many conferences back to back. It’s a bit numbing. You start to pick up patterns, a lot of similarities and repetitions in speeches, a lot of big ambitions, of “commitments”, but you know the reality of things and how little we take care of the ocean. So you wonder why, why do we meet? Why do we have all of those conferences? Because WE TRY. We try to do good, we try to juggle with human egos, we try to slalom through the lobbyists, the bureaucracy, the blue washing. We try to change this crazy humanity in which people do not even take care of the Ocean that gives them the very own air they breathe. I am not even talking about all the beautiful creatures, the carbon sink, and the fact that the ocean regulates our climate. It’s the air we breathe, and we are destroying it. We try because we have HOPE. Sometimes I wonder why to be fully transparent, and I doubt, and it is good to see other people with the same questions and doubts, but still with this little fire in their hearts. They all try, they are passionate and so intelligent, they give me #hope!
