HO’OMAIKA’I

Congratulations to Dr Jerry D. Ryan on earning his 2nd Degree Black Belt.

We first met through Sifu Al Dacascos, whose birthday was yesterday; so it is fitting that in this Year of the Horse we have a giant Horse in this photo as this is Sifu Al’s year!

His promotion is quite special as it is one of the last to bear the endorsement and seal of SGM Rick Alemany before his recent passing.

His promotion is also the first certificate In Kajukenbo Wun Hop Kuen Do that I ever signed as a “GM”.

Known in class as “The Bulldozer”, Jerry is an inspiring person with much to teach to those fortunate enough to learn from him.

😊🤙

Grateful to have served this young man as his Martial Arts teacher, trainer, & coach most of his life.

Now after 16 years he has earned his Black Belt, and his journey has reawakened and redefined my own.

When I lost my childhood teacher GM George Iversen in 2005. SGM Rick Alemany immediately stepped up to invite me to train at his home in Waianae. He’d been Sifu George’s fighting Coach that helped him become a Champion & they both were under Sid Asuncion along with my Wun Hop Kuen Do teacher Sifu Al Dacascos.

In losing Sifu George it really meant more than words can say to still have teachers to guide me.

GGM’s Al Dela Cruz, Al Dacascos, Rick Alemany, George Iversen, Sixto Ramos Jr, Luka Ramos, & Alan Lee Carter were all from the Sid Asuncion lineage. At different times in life they all stepped up to help me.

I knew SGM Rick since I was 6 years old. I remember when I was 10 seeing him spar and win against every single person in Sifu Iversen’s class.

As a boy I asked him about Kenpo roots. I’d asked the right person; he’d trained with Professors James Mitose, William Chow, Sijo Emperado, Sid Asuncion, & Brother Abe Kamahoahoa and earned ranks in their systems.

Many years later after Sid Asunción’s funeral Sifu George introduced me to his senior Sifu Al Dacascos & recommended I train with him as well.

Recently we lost GM Don Crummer, the man who became my best friend In Kajukenbo. Recently we had his celebration of life and then in the same week we lost SGM Rick.

Then in this same week my student Jacob rises in a moment that instantly has changed everything.

I remember being younger than he is now when that moment happened for me, and like him having had the same team of teachers take me on that journey from early childhood to the glimpse of maturity.

I see the torch passed in a way that is not easily explained, and yet I remember it in the eyes of my teachers.

So in the moment of promoting Jacob, I could feel the presence of my teachers at my first & last promotion. The brief yet eternal look in Sifu Iversen’s eyes & the choice Alemany & I both made to pause in that moment in a way most men would not do.

Now I know why.

Aloha is forever.

Kajukenbo Grandmaster
Donald Bruce Crummer
A Celebration of Life

We came from different lineages,
and yet he was best friend in the art.

He was a beast of an athlete in Football, Baseball, and even Golf.

He was a Surfer on the level that hasn’t been seen since the “Big Wednesday” and “Endless Summer era of surfers always searching for their next challenge, uncertain where that journey might take them.

He was a legendary Martial Artist in the old school lineage of GGM Aleju Reyes, GGM Gary Forbach, & SGM Chuck Turner. Those who have seen the landmark film series can see him there as one of the chosen few selected to represent the Emperado Method. Even amongst the toughest men In Kajukenbo he was seen as a force to be reckoned with.

He was a builder who built homes for legendary surfers and humble families.

He was a true friend, advocate, protector. He was a husband, a father, and even a grandfather.

Our friendship began through my father’s teacher Uncle David Nu’uhiwa Sr.

He became my patient to help restore his breathing after getting the bends while diving.

It took years, but we were able to restore his lung capacity and function to the point where he could return to surfing and hard training.

He was a master carpenter and builder. He literally built the gym I teach in today.

When he was due to receive his 9th Degree Grandmaster belt he would only accept if it was together with me.

We met at the Palama Settlement, the original home of Kajukenbo, where my previous promotion from SGM Rick Alemany was recognized alongside his new promotion from the KSDI BOA represented by Grandmasters Gary Forbach,Rick Kingi, & Jesse Corpus.

He made the effort to invite my parents for which I will forever be grateful.

When his sister Sherri spoke of her plans for his memorial I knew what he would want and resolved to honor his wishes.

This was something he talked about many times over the years having gone together to so many of the funerals of our seniors, most notably the service of his friend GM John Pascua.

I’m doing a “LEGENDS” series where I train with legends in the martial arts and make these 15-20min long videos FREE on my Patreon. Why is it free?
1) I want the younger generation to learn and keep their legacy alive!
2) I don’t feel right charging on my small platform (patreon) when it’s their teachings, so it’s better it’s for everyone!
3) I know a lot of people might be struggling and it’s a small way I can give back, the joy of learning martial arts together!

The best way to support is just go sign up for free on the patreon and if you stick around & pay hell ya! If not these series will remain free forever ^_^

Links in bio to join the inner circle Osu!
