6th chapter of “𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴”:

𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟯 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮’ 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶, 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝗼𝗻.

The document, addressed to 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘩 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘤., is dated Feb 23, 1983: 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 was released ~2 months prior, while 𝘉𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘦 𝘑𝘦𝘢𝘯 dropped as a single ~20 days earlier.

Michael (24 at the time) was right at the dawn of 𝘔𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢, giving a rare glimpse into Michael the entrepreneur.

𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘩 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘤. was founded on July 19, 1982, to manage merch licenses tied to his name. Closed March 1, 2003, replaced by MJ Licensing, LLC, it reactivated post-2009 under 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘭 𝘑𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘰𝘯.
Beyond merch, the company controlled patents for his technical inventions, like the famous 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯 trick—where shoes engineered to lock into the floor let Michael & his dancers defy gravity. Famous from 1988’s 𝘚𝘮𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭, the patent protected its use in live shows.
Michael registered the anti-gravity shoe patent, secretly adding designers Michael Bush & Dennis Tompkins without their knowledge as a gift of gratitude for bringing his vision to life.

This document was the key foundation for every license, trademark, and patent in Italy for anything related to MJ.
A year later (Feb 28, 1984), at the 26𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘺 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴, Michael shattered records by winning an unprecedented 8 Grammys in a single night.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank @signedbytheking and @fede_20054 for their consultancy, support, and endless helpfulness; they are two awesome guys and two of the best experts when it comes to Michael’s autographs and fedoras!

Michael was just 27 years old, and 1985 was the absolute key year in the career of Michael Jackson the entrepreneur and philanthropist. 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 had already been out for three years, shattering every single sales and box office record. It became the best-selling album in music history, allowing the immensely talented kid from the Jackson 5 to become the undisputed King of Pop by winning 8 Grammy Awards in a single night in 1984, a monumental feat that had never occurred before that moment.

And here it is, the 5th chapter of “𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴”:

𝗔 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗩𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟱.

In January of that year, he wrote, created, and published the charity anthem 𝘞𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 to actively fight hunger in Africa. However, it was exactly eight months later that Michael truly shook the global music industry once again: on August 14, 1985, he acquired the massive ATV Music catalog.
It consisted of approximately 4,000 songs, which famously included the entire production of The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Bruce Springsteen, Cher, and many others.
With this incredible move, Michael Jackson literally held the planet’s music industry right in the palm of his hands, dominating both as a global recording artist and as a major producer.
A decade later, in 1995, Sony purchased 50% of the catalog for an impressive $95 million, merging it with their own publishing division to form Sony/ATV. They eventually bought out the remaining 50% in 2016 for an astounding $750 million. To put this in perspective, it is estimated that between annual dividends and royalties, this specific catalog brought in an average of $50 to $75 million a year for Michael alone.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank @signedbytheking and @fede_20054 for their consultancy, support, and endless helpfulness; they are two awesome guys and two of the best experts when it comes to Michael’s autographs and fedoras!
