Cleveland. Jesuit. 1886.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Autumn in the U.S. means football season, and our guest today is one of the greatest teachers and coaches in the history of Jesuit high school football. Chuck Kyle was the head football coach at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland from 1983 until his retirement in 2022. His teams racked up 353 wins and an Ohio-record 11 Division I state championships. More than a dozen of his players reached the NFL, including longtime quarterback Brian Hoyer and current Patriots starting linebacker Dre’Mont Jones. And earlier this year, Amazon Prime Video released a documentary on Coach Kyle called “The Object of the Game,” which features interviews with football luminaries such as Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin.

During our recent interview, host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Coach Kyle about his coaching philosophy and what made him so successful. Coach Kyle embodies the idea that football can be a powerful venue for teaching virtues like teamwork and perseverance that apply to life both on and off the field. And as Kyle also served as an English teacher throughout his coaching career, they discussed his favorites books to read and teach. It was such a fun conversation that revealed Coach Kyle’s passion for teaching and how he cared for his players using some of that good old-fashioned Jesuit cura personalis.

Jim Brennan might be coaching soccer at St. Ignatius, but his student-athletes are getting a lot more than Xs and Os. On Episode 401, released today, you’ll hear about him also being chaplain for hockey and a theology teacher, plus ten years of taking students to Northern Ireland. Hear the testimony as well relative to dealing with the passing of a classmate. 🙏

A few weeks ago, we caught up with our scholars at Saint Ignatius High School over breakfast. We loved hearing what classes, sporting events, clubs, and community service opportunities students are looking forward to this school year. We can’t wait to follow up on our next visit.

Each year, the Feast of St. Therese brings our Malachi House community together for a tradition that reaches back nearly four decades. 🌹

This year, residents, board members, volunteers, staff, and friends, gathered in our chapel for Mass, followed by lunch and fellowship.

We were grateful to celebrate with Rev. Raymond Guiao, S.J. ’82, President and Chief Mission Officer at Saint Ignatius High School and our Malachi House Chaplain, as well as Deacon Leo Bistak. Thank you also to Denise Dufala, Lawrence Wallace and Rachael Kribbs for filling our chapel with beautiful music, and our volunteer student, Jordyn, from St. Martin de Porres High School.

Our connection to St. Therese dates back to 1987, when roses mysteriously appeared throughout the renovation of the row houses that would soon become Malachi House. Ever since, roses have filled our home each year on her Feast Day, reminding us of the love, compassion, and small acts of kindness at the heart of our mission.

Thank you to everyone who made this year’s celebration so special and continues to carry this cherished Malachi House tradition forward.

“I will spend my heaven doing good on Earth. I will let fall a shower of roses.” 🌹
