one good thing about this place is that the pints stay cold by themselves

I (@_martha_pan_) loved the super talented, beautiful creatures I met during the residency. The strangers that became sisters and brothers in only three weeks time. The thoughts, the dreams, the drinks, the dances, we shared. I can’t wait to meet you all soon 🧡! One of the things I loved most about the residency was the feeling of being away from the world, and just having nothing but your work to think about. As there are no cars on the island, it gives it this really tranquil atmosphere so it really allowed me to think about what direction I wanted to go with my photography, and the steps I'd need to take to get there. @sijm_ #descoverartists

The island of Hydra is situated in the Saronic Gulf, which like much of Greece, was formed around 20 million years from the collision of two tectonic plates. It got its name from the historic abundance of fresh water on the island, but due to subsequent seismic activity over the years, many of these upwelling springs have been contaminated with seawater. Because of this long volcanic history in the area, the coastline of hydra drops off deep very fast, and so many of the beaches have really good places to dive from, and the locals are absolutely fearless with it. @sijm_ #descoverartists

It always amazes me how nature flourishes absolutely everywhere. Whether its in the cracks of an old house, or inches from the shoreline, you find some form of life absolutely everywhere you look. This particular tree probably got here by floating across from the mainland, or somewhere further afield and thought that this was a good place to start growing for some reason, but I guess humans do the exact same thing. @sijm_

One thing I liked about Hydra was the soft pastel colours that seemed to cover the island and the sea around it. This particular view was from the balcony of the residency house, an old naval captains mansion on the side of the hill. I found myself coming out here a lot to edit pictures, and just watching the light adapt as the day went on. I think that's my favourite part of nature photography, it makes you notice how the world completely changes depending on how the light interacts with it, and I always found looking through a camera makes you take a moment to appreciate that. What is it about your artistic process that makes you notice things you would normally miss? Do you have a particular place you like to be in? Or have any rituals you go through?

We wanted to end our @descoverartists takeover with a few more general moments from the residency and Hydra. Artists are by nature, true nomads, always looking for something new to get inspired from. The residency strived to offer exactly that, new faces, new places and new experiences. We wanted the inspiration and the experience of the island itself to transcend into the creative process and into the final work itself.

We are very thankful for @nomasmagazine for allowing us to do this takeover, and for providing us with this opportunity to show everyone "our" Hydra and introduce to you all our talented artists and charismatic people we met along the way. Thank you ❤️
