This photograph was born in a propaganda war.

In 1915, Germany was dropping leaflets on Indian trenches, urging Sikh, Hindu and Muslim soldiers to turn on their British officers. The India Office answered with a camera. On July 24, 1915, photographer H.D. Girdwood pointed his lens at the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs marching into billets at Le Sart, France.

The picture was meant to show obedience. What it preserved instead are the faces of men who tied their turbans in the dark before dawn, prayed before they fought, and never asked anyone’s permission to be both Sikh and soldier.

Sikhs were roughly 1% of India’s population, and close to 1 in 5 men in the British Indian Army when the war began. By some estimates more than 100,000 served.

A century later, the question in that photograph came back to me in the U.S. Army. It still comes back to every Sikh American who wants to serve without giving up their faith.

Did someone in your family serve in the World Wars? Tell me their name below 👇 Let’s say them out loud.
