So 2019 was pretty rad... Thank you for all the love and support.

I pushed hard this year and it feels good to look back on it all... I had my work featured in the 2019 @arri camera showreel, received my SASC accreditation from the @insta_sasc and was even nominated for a @thesamas_ award for “Music Video of the Year”. I was fortunate enough to shoot a bunch of Narrative projects, Music Videos and TV Commercials I’m super proud of and that makes my heart super full

2019 was not without lows though and I know we all only post the good stuff online... But there were a lot of lows too like my relationship ending or my dad being diagnosed with cancer and starting treatment. Fuck I still hate the c word. But we got through it. And when you do, they make the highs a little higher if anything. Thank you to all those that gave me a a chance or opportunity this year to create something with them. Not to mention my crew, collaborators and agent who have always had my back and allow me to do what I love doing.

Here’s looking forward to 2020 and pushing even harder than I did this year... I leave for London in 2 days time and am there for 45 days in total. So here’s to another year and even more Insta stories from set and my life.

I find music videos to be one of favourite vehicles. They have allowed me to branch out often as a Cinematographer or try experiment and work at certain aspects of the craft
.
One such music video I’m proud of was for Kenyan artists @delathedelz x @drreign for their single #GoodBadBoy - Directed by the rad @silasmiami and produced by @peetvsnstaden
.
This particular music video allowed me to craft and create something between a music video but with aspects of a fashion piece, which was really fun
.
So here are some of my suggestions for lighting and filming Darker Skintones - As I have been asked about this before quite a few times by students and those interested in cinematography
.
I find larger and softer diffused sources often look way better, you need to give the skin something to reflect. It’s not about the amount or intensity, but think about the surface of the light. So I find a larger source is great for this. For this music video I used a 1.2k HMI with a chimera and then through a 4x4 frame as our key light. I would also walk in a poly board in below the eyes to bring out that radiance in Dela. She also just looks beautiful on camera and knows how to own it, so that helps too haha
.
Sometimes I’ll use a polarizer in camera too and use that to dial in or dial out reflections. This helps shape and filter the light in an amazing way when you’re working with beautifully reflective skin and the reflective surfaces under the skin. Just keep in mind you lose a stop or two with a polarizer in camera. So make sure you have enough light
.
Lastly don’t be scared to play with Colour. I find blues react really nicely as kickers or edge lights. You can see this in other examples of my work. Or how we chose the red fabric against Dela’s skintone which just worked so gorgeously and made her pop even more in frame and on camera
.
We shot this music video on the @reddigitalcinema Dragon Scarlet-W with Kowa anamorphic lenses supplier by @mediafilmservice .
