It is okay to take breaks.

I thought I lost my love for kayaking, but all I needed was a quick reset and some honest encouragement. While I was in Dominica 🇩🇲 I didn’t paddle a single time and last year I think I paddled roughly a handful of times. Very unusual for me, given that I’ve been at it for 16 years.

The reason? I was fed up and feeling like my effort to grow the sport within my community was being sabotaged from all sides. Then there were the people who just couldn’t mind their business, so I left. I pursued other activities I grew up on: trail running, farming, gardening, cooking. By doing all of this I was able to stay active and keep my mind and spirit at ease.

Then, suddenly, a month ago, a friend from @downtownboathouse asked if I wanted to teach kayaking again. Admittedly, I wanted to say no, but I couldn’t. Last week I taught my first class in two years, and it felt amazing, because I finally realized one of the reasons for all of this: I love the challenge of helping people pursue their dreams and goals. Throughout that entire training session, all I felt was my passion building and my joy coming back. 🤩

So that is why I am sharing this. Taking breaks and pursuing other things is okay. For the most part, they will bring you right back to where you need to be. Every seed you plant comes back to nourish you 🌱

The last two weeks has been a dream! I led my first training class in two years to some amazing students. Then guide Juneteenth paddle with @hudsonriverriders and everyone had a blast. I officially hosted my first event through @metrefoutdoors. Finally, got to celebrate with my brother @sannyja1988 and friends as the Knicks won their first NBA🏆 in 53 years.

Thanks to everyone who has been supportive in my life.
You mean the world to me. Look out for trail running, paddling, cooking, and other outdoor activities I’ll be leading soon 🌞

The work continues! Last weekend, the Bronx Sigmas teamed up with our adopt-a-business @lovinglaundryllc and adopt-a-school @pugsleyprep for a successful clothing drive, helping over 100 families! Huge thanks to our neo Bro. Jean Jeanty, Principal of Pugsley Preparatory Academy, and the other school principals for making it happen. On the following Monday, Bro. Jean organized a food drive with @bharatikemraj who provided turkeys for the holiday season! The Bronx Sigmas are committed to uplifting our community!
