🎂I opened Xtabay 25 years ago today. I started out with a $7000 bank loan and racks and racks of vintage clothing I had amassed over the years, selling to local shops and being part of another store. I was 26. I was addicted to shopping, alcohol and dumb boys. My vision for Xtabay was based off finding a garage sale copy of Yma Sumac’s “Voice of The Xtabay”. I was enchanted by the imagery and the idea of the Xtabay being the most elusive of all woman. However, elusive I was not. From waking up hungover on the dressing room floor on 9/11 to staging ear drum destroying local rock shows I made quite an impression. It took getting sober, evolving with the times and a whole lot of fabulous women to last as long as I have. I am endlessly grateful to everyone (well, pretty much everyone…)who has walked through the doors. As you know, I’ve decided to close the brick and mortar at the end of the month in order to devote myself to selling more here on Instagram and on our website shopxtabay.com - I hope you continue to follow along. It’s been the most fabulous way to grow up. Thank you for everything! 🎂

In the spirit of…well, the holiday spirit…I’m interrupting my chronological order of manicures here to share my most recent - and festive - one!

My birthday was in mid-December, and my wonderful partner gifted me my first nail art kit. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to experiment with all my new brushes and tools. Plus, I had a haul of Black Friday polishes and some other untried’s that I was desperate to break into.

This set used about 20 different polishes! Brands used: @crackedpolish @mooncat @beeskneeslacquer @holotaco @hauntedpolish. Also, shout out to my friend, @silvanthreads who made the polish on my right pinky - a gorgeous deep blue/green.

Free-handing the images was such a joy with proper tools, and I can’t wait to create more! I took video to document everything I used, but it was too long to include here 😅 I included photos of every polish used, and if you’re wondering about a color, just let me know, and I’ll happily share! Just too much to list here.

Oh also, this mani lasted SO LONG. Not a single chip until the day before I removed this (7 days of perfection! Last few photos are on day 8). I engaged in deep house cleaning, Christmas decorating, latte making, and found out that I’m farsighted - so learned how to put in contacts (which meant LOTS of handwashing). All with this mani!

💅🏻 @beeskneeslacquer Apple-y Ever After (right thumb, this was a FB group special release). Amazingly beautiful holo. I thought it’d have texture because of how sparkly it is, but it is perfectly smooth and I couldn’t stop staring at it.

It’s my birthday 🎂
Older, wiser, and, unfortunately, sadder. For now - until it passes with time. It’s been a hard and lonely year. Forever will I continue wishing I could escape into a fantasy world and find peace there 🌿
