Los Angeles | Nicole Coson: Vessels, organized by Silverlens, closes tomorrow!

We’re open today and tomorrow, 10 am–5 pm.

Containerization, which breaks down and smooths the complex life of our planet into bite-sized units within a data system, may seem like the ultimate science of commerce, marked by total speculative abstraction—a turn toward diagrams and flows, calculation and prediction. And yet today’s logistics industry still follows many of the shipping routes established through imperial and colonial trade, themselves informed by millennia of commodity exchange. To this day, the vast majority of consumer goods journey from factory to shopper by sea, reactivating what is arguably the oldest—and most political—of global networks. As our current political moment reveals with particular clarity, maritime choke points such as the Straits of Malacca and Hormuz remain sites of profound economic and geopolitical conflict, much as they were in the eighteenth and even the fifteenth centuries. If “logistics wants to dispense with the subject altogether,” as Fred Moten and Stefano Harney propose in The Undercommons (2013), it cannot help but stubbornly produce it as well: indeed, in endlessly shifting consumer goods around the world, including Los Angeles, the bustling port city where Coson’s exhibition takes place, shipping produces history itself. Yet, as the artist’s canvases—resembling portals permanently closed against inspection—suggest that history may not always be universally legible or immediately nameable, though it is no less real or concrete for that. Coson activates the logic of printmaking to question the durability of social and material traces across geographies and time. Like her previous projects, Vessels asks what can be imprinted onto materials, by or as art, and what will inevitably escape them.

Los Angeles | Nicole Coson: Vessels closes on October 24! Organized with Silverlens, Vessels is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Gallery hours: Thursday–Saturday, 10 am–5 pm

In terms of scale, Vessels is the artist’s most ambitious series to date, achieving the registration of standard commercial shipping container doors in their entirety. The artist sourced these disused doors as scrap metal online, effectively repurposing them as giant printing blocks in the studio by inking the surface of each door in full detail, including its handles, hinges, and cracks. Coson proceeds by carefully laying unstretched canvas over each door, presses its contours into the fabric using the weight of her own body. This physically laborious process involves stubborn scraping, scratching, and pushing the canvas into every surface of the doors, using various parts of the body as well as makeshift tools such as wooden spoons. Compared to traditional printmaking—and even to the artist’s earlier series—the results scale-up and monumentalize its formal language, revealing marks that teeter between the precise indexicality of the medium and the gestural expressivity of painting (dots, zigzags, etc.). These sit next to, and occasionally emerge from, details in the container door’s surface such as numbers and letters. Like the knowledge of what these doors once secured, these are signs from an information system that has been all but lost.
