If you stand inside Silver Moon Saloon and stretch your arms out to either side, you can probably touch both walls that run along what feels like more of a dive bar hallway than anything else.

Downtown Winston-Salem is an attractive place to visit, populated by great restaurants, breweries, upscale cocktail spots, you name it. But Silver Moon Saloon is the move. A PBR-soaked shoebox of a dive bar, the space feels unchanged despite its long history, the best kind of concoction to create a great dive.

In the long and storied history of dive bar signs, usually some kind of impressive, ancient neon sign is the high watermark. Silver Moon Saloon proclaims its presence in two unique ways, one a metal sign over the front door with what feel like scissor-cut scraps of metal spelling out the name of the bar, the other a simple painted description along one wall documenting the bar's two best features: "Ale and Beer."
