The combi crew has been tearing up the glaciers in Saas Fee and Stelvio over the past couple weeks. For Sam Mulligan, this camp was his first time back on snow since sustaining an leg/ankle injury during GS training in January. “Feels good! Legs not broken anymore and I’m enjoying the process of building back up to speed.” - @smullyski

Back front or trap bar squat. Which one is best? That is the question.
Most strength coaches do not even ask this question, just program one to train “X” (insert here: glutes, legs, lower body strength)

But the thing about human performance is, it is not fitness. All exercises are not created equal.
We are not training a muscle group, we are training function and robustness.
There are massive differences between each of these options when you start applying context and intention.

Take an alpine skier for instance, which one would you choose to help hone capability and build capacity for off-season training?

Let’s remember that alpine skiing technique requires that:
1) the shins be flexed forward on the foot to create pressure into the boot and therefore link legs to ski.
2) the centre of gravity be over the midfoot, not back on the heels, to be in a responsive position on the skis.
3) the low spine is maintained in some degree of flexion or neutral position in all disciplines (Slalom, GS, Super G and downhill)

Now which one would you choose? Does that affect your answer? It should.

Add in that we are in mid-season building strength for G force load management, will be working towards more absorption type training as we get closer to the in-season/training camp, and prepping endurance fatigue in more ski specific positioning.

Context and intention now drive your choice. Which one do you choose?
I know which one I would.

Find out how to best apply context and intention to amplify your programming impact.

A diagnosis is only part of the story. It only tells us what is going on at the moment. It doesn’t provide us a reason why the issue materialized in the first place. And many diagnoses can have more than one causative factor.

What if the patellar tendinitis is because the ankle dorsiflexion is restricted and we just keep treating the knee because that is where the pain is?

Or because the lumbar spine/pelvis/hip complex lacks coordination in a single leg stance and therefore the system leans out on barriers in the hip and knee, de-centrating the joint. Addressing this understanding of the lack of stability, instead of just treating the pain in the knee, would be the path to true treatment success.

Developing a hypothesis as to why the issue is there in the first place allows you to assess and then address the actual drivers of the issue.

Reconditioning is an approach to holistically assess the body providing context and perspective for developing a hypothesis on the cause and then the follow up strategies to integrate your skills effectively in addressing the actual drivers of the issue.

Address the cause, not the symptom.

Thankfully and creatively, @aspensnowmass was able to host the #USAlpineChamps this season. With covid protocols in place, no spectators and limited media, the races took place safely, with a feeling of relief and sense of gratitude.

And the medals took a unique twist… repurposing vintage (80s) skis. I sawed them into pieces… This was hard, as the skis are so beautiful. Especially the colorful K2s and the Japanese Yamahas with their minimal graphics... But the cross-sections were just as slick with their laminated hardwood and various layers. Discipline and place is engraved on the backs.

The event includes 5 disciplines: Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G, Downhill and Alpine Combined. Congrats podium finishers!
