Two days left to see Lily Ramirez’s beautiful takes on landscape paintings. Her work graces the walls of both our Main Street and Libbie Galleries in our current show Field Studies; closing Friday July 24th. You do not want to miss this beautiful work!

Lily Ramírez (b. 1991, Los Angeles) is a Mexican-American painter known for her distinctive “mark-making”style, transforming abstract lines and vivid color into dynamic aerial maps of landscapes and environments. Beneath the intricate compositions, her work carries deeper personal narratives, subtly encoded in the evocative titles of each piece—titles that poetically intertwine with core memories from her own life.

“Skyfall”

Ian Fleming’s Bond persists as one of the great male archetypes. Utter the words, “Bond. James Bond,” and one is met with the familiarity of a smile or, at least, the insouciance of a smirk. The point is recognition—universally so. But what is a male archetype, and why, so often, are celebrations of masculinity accompanied, in part, by a denigration of the “fairer sex”? “Strong men,” per the inimitable Michelle Obama, “do not need to diminish or put down women to assert their power.” Bond himself evolved. From Connery to Craig, if one paid attention, there was a quantum leap in persona. Layered, complex, vulnerable, confidently so—masculinity is not a monolith; it is multifaceted. Singularity, therefore, is as ironic as it is inane—an idea lost, hilariously so, on the John Rambos touting themselves as the next double-O. Ha, no.

“Damask Rose”

The Middle East holds a special place in my heart. A rich, diverse, complex region, steeped in more history than a lifetime dares lay claim. To have lived there is to have sipped Karak; to have debated in the Mejlis; celebrated goals scored near and far; observed the juxtapositional grace and heritage of the Bedouins and the contemporary audacity, scale, and courage of cities that arose from sand and touched the sky. To have feasted, laughed, and shed tears; to bear witness to contradictions, hypocrisy, and fears. To have embraced royal palms and delight in simple charms. A falcon traversing an oasis of desert awe, yet silent, meticulous, majestic, from up high, pirouetting steep, may one yet again experience the reveries of nobility and nomads, be it in wakeful sunlight or moonlit sleep.

“Michael”

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” So begins the greatest novel (in my opinion) ever written: Anna Karenina. One can only speculate as to Mario Puzo’s influences when writing “The Godfather,” though the imagination need not stretch in thinking the author might have taken some inspiration from what has since been established as a “principle”. Some, erroneously, refer to the Godfather as a mafia movie. Such opinions are miasmatic and should be avoided accordingly. To reduce the Godfather to the size of organized crime is to reduce Da Vinci to a painter. The Godfather, is not the story of Vito Andolini, rather, the tragedy of Michael Corleone. A man for whom destiny was neither a friend nor foe, rather, a Janus-faced cloud serving at the mercy of mercurial gods. Gods who saw fit to assassinate, not one, but two, of the damned brothers when Sunny met his maker on the causeway. Henceforth, familial weight; labored eyes; simmering torture; a paradoxical temper, equal parts Versailles and Vesuvius; an ability to love, but only with fangs. Burden, withdrawal, symphony and silence—and why? Because women and children can afford to be careless, men cannot. Vito’s gift; Michael’s curse.

“Andalusia”

Helen of Troy, Michelle Obama, Daenerys Targaryen, Monica Lewinsky, Anna Politkovskaya: a cross-section of diverse, stunning, formidable women, all of whom did or continue to spark the ire of ogres, empty suits, zealots, and meretricious monarchs. Purported symbols of power reduced to snivels, pejoratives, and parodic by-lines, their insecurities channeled high into the night sky like a bat-signal for the equally weak, similarly feeble, and analogously laughable. A rallying call for those uncomfortable in their own skin, hence the reinforcement of the like-minded and the flaccid validation of those serving as their generals. It’s all rather sad, isn’t it? Margaret Thatcher—someone who understood better than most that what many of these “men” really need is mother to give them a good spanking when bad, and a laudable cookie when good—once said, “being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” Well, being a man is about character. If you are obsessed with someone else being one, chances are, you’re not.”

@pe_gernay presented the BA2 semester from @ensaparisest Atelier Gernay to @ditellaarquitectura in Buenos-Aires, on an invitation from @santiagogiusto.

The goal of this semester was to make the most of what already exists—both in the built environment and within the field of architecture and its photographic representation—in order to uncover new layers of meaning.

Students were tasked with redesigning model homes located in the north of Paris, collaging existing floor plans, existing cross-sections, and existing images, while incorporating an existing found program.

The transformation projects were not intended to provide solutions to a problem, but rather served as an opportunity to reflect on contemporary lifestyles and, more broadly, on our contemporary society.

Thanks to photographer @thomascristiani for his perspective on the site, to the intermediate jury members @sami_aloulou_septembre and @pauldevarrieux , and to the final jury members @eva_maloisel, @marcantoine_durand, and @laurent_esmilaire for the discussions about the potential of the projects.

“A Potemkin Village”

Am I misanthropic? Heck, maybe. I kid. But with age, the arrival of new streams. Indifferent waterways; insouciant lakes; unbothered canals. Seriously, the more I care, the less I give a…well, you can fill in the blank. And can you blame me? Look at the state of us. Discourse reduced to dank, algorithmically manipulated sludge. Mediocrity: platformed, celebrated, and at its apotheosis: elected. Bigotry on tap (and available for overnight delivery at no extra charge). The grifter economy surpassing the GDP of most developed nations and second only to the irresponsible, avarice-filled land grab of A.I.: the final frontier. And at every turn, yet another huckster tap dancing across yet another screen, gaslighting an increasingly stupefied audience devoid of individual thoughts, less still of personal artistry—and still, we’re told this is the greatest of all the epochs. Prince Potemkin would be proud.
