Vein and Crystalline Tumblers - on show in Belfast! A THIRST FOR SILVER brings together makers at every stage of their careers - from recent graduates to internationally recognised master silversmiths - and reflects the breadth, diversity and vitality of contemporary silversmithing in the UK. United by a shared form, each maker has interpreted the silver beaker in a unique and distinctive way, revealing an extraordinary range of ideas, techniques and artistic expression. Together, these works celebrate the beauty, versatility and outstanding craftsmanship of contemporary silver, offering a compelling insight into the innovation, creativity and skill of today’s British silversmiths. A Thirst for Silver runs until 31st October at Craft NI Gallery, Royal Avenue, Belfast. Crystalline and Vein Tumblers, sterling silver, hand chased and repousse chased, hand engraved. 🌻SUMMER SUNFLOWER🌻Friends commissioned this special bowl, a gift for a happy couple's wedding in July. ✍🏼The paper design had sat on my bench for a while, waiting for the right time for me to bring it to life in silver... It turns out this was the season! 🏵️A one off piece, with individual petals applied by the Keum Boo technique of fusing gold to silver in an eternal bond. The petals represent those attending the wedding and the fusion of hearts in love - surrounding the main element of the Fibonacci spiral, like the grand tapestry of life, embodied in the sunflower. 🔨Chased by myself with assistance from my intern Alice (as I was also busy working on the Phoenix!). I enjoyed finally fusing the gold on, which glinted in the summer sun! #sunflowerbowl #miriamhanid #silverbowl #silverandgold #keumboo

SOMETHING BREWING...I'm working on a few projects at the moment, but am keeping some of these commissions under wraps for now until the full launch later this summer... what I seem to have been doing though, is plenty of filming and some photoshoots too... 🎥Here are some workshop glimpses taken by Nick Singleton when he visited last month to capture some filming of the design process, raising and planishing! 🔨 Luckily Alice could work away in the machining/polishing room... and meet up for soup, olive bread and parsnip cake (thank you Alice!) every now and then! REUNION - It was a pleasure to meet up with so many talented silversmiths and jewellers today at Cutlers Hall, and see the fresh new work on display. I'm honoured to be a part of this special community. As I introduced Alice to the many makers I have known for many years, and some we had just met today, I was aware of and grateful for just how many skilled makers, resources, and wealth of knowledge I have access to as a part of the silversmithing and jewellery industry in the UK. ALICE - from Ecole Boulle, Paris, is with me for a 3 month internship, focusing on chasing and silversmithing. During her first week Alice has been working on a Crystalline tumbler, an idea I started a year or two ago, which past intern Jess also worked on briefly.
