2018 - Mongolia/Russia - The End. Rally spam over. Best thing I’ve ever done. Would go again tomorrow.

Massive massive thank you to @bayeux_ltd for the processing and scans. We’ve been saying we’ll do a photography book from the trip for years… promise we’ll get round to that soon.

2018 - Mongolia - Nick having a piss, scooters in the desert, one of my favourite camping spots of the trip and not much use for google maps.

2018 - Mongolia - Various Joss and Ed breakdowns in the Mongolian outback. The Italians kept us fed whilst we waited.

I barely knew how to change a tyre before we left, whereas Joss and Ed were literally taking the axels off of their car, smashing stuff with rocks to fix things and putting the car back together. We popped a suspension arm out of place coming out of the Pamir mountains at one point and Joss and Ed were with us to fix it. I remember thinking how screwed we’d of been if they weren’t - We were in absolute no mans land. Cheers lads.

2018 - Mongolia border. After almost two months on the road we made it to the Mongolian border. Mixed emotions of excitement we’d made it to Mongolia but sad that the trip was drawing to a close. Although we did still have to drive a considerable way through Mongolian deserts before the finish line in Russia.

2018 - Tajikistan - More money exchanges, had lunch with a nice Tajik fella, saw some local drama (slide 5) think someone fell down some stairs.

2018 - Uzbekistan - The hottest I’ve ever been, the best shower I’ve ever had. We’d not long left the Turkmen desert when Ed and Joss broke down in the middle of the day, with absolutely no shade in 40 degree heat, and low on water. We were covered in sand and sweating. I remember my hair being like cement. It was brutal and grim. We eventually found a petrol station where they let us pull in for Joss and Ed to fix their car under a canopy, out of the brutal sun. They had a hose which we propped up in a tree and showered under. Life changing shower. Slide 7 for the glow up.

Putting the desert tyres on before heading into the Turkmenistan desert to see a giant hole on fire, which I didn’t take a single photograph of. We passed through, and spent a night in Ashgabat, Turkmenistans capital city (last pic) en route which was bizarre - incredible buildings everywhere but everything and everywhere empty. Ghost town.

2018 - Stranded at the Baku ferry port, trying to cross the Caspian Sea in to Turkmenistan. This was a fairly mad period of the rally where we were trying to get into Turkmenistan. Sadly didn’t photograph much of this leg of the trip. Can’t remember why but we were entering a dictatorship - the strange rules and backhanders that went with it. Buying money on the black market in corner shops, paying totally made up fines at the border after being held for 24 hours, and seeing portraits of the dictator holding puppies everywhere you go because people got angry that he ordered loads of stray dogs to be killed. Bizzare.

2018 - The D915 North East Turkey. Dubbed one of the world’s most dangerous roads. Sheer drops inches away from the tyres at points (not captured - was probably bricking it in the passenger seat whilst Sam guided us through). I think also where we found an animal skull and stupidly decided to put it on the car. I’m not superstitious but seemed to bring us nothing but bad luck. And it stunk.

2018 - Cappadocia, Turkey - Got up at sunrise to watch the hot air balloons, then the Italians got down to the serious business and sorted out the olive oil situation. This was also where we welcomed Joss, Ed and their 1969 Morris Miner into our convoy for the rest of the trip. Fortunately we were in no rush - They broke down every day. Without fail. Quality lads thoigh and handy to have around seeing as us lot barely knew how to change a tyre.

2018 - Salt Flats somewhere in central Turkey. We camped out in the middle of nowhere on a hill which looked down over some salt flats. We didn’t really expect to see anyone but as it got dark a farmer approached and we could only assume we were on his land (we were) and it all felt a little bit sketchy. When he got to us, it turned into a fairly comical conversation via google translate and hand gestures. Turned out he did own the land and told us to come visit his yard down the hill in the morning, where we had tea, chatted (ish) and he let us drift the cars around the salt flats. Even helped us make a rig to film from. Bloke didn’t speak a lick of english (nor did we speak any Turkish) but was one of the gems of the trip.

2018 - 1st Leg of a 10,000 mile (give or take) car journey from London to Mongolia on the Mongol Rally - Camping in Germany, start line in Czech Republic, our first trip to a mechanic in Hungary, a Serbian border crossing and I think a coffee stop in the Bulgarian mountains after a very, very sketchy camping situation the night before.
