Congratulations to our Associate Composers, Luis Ramirez and Simon Alami, winners of The Arts & Letters Club of Toronto’s Emerging Canadian Composers Competition! 🎉 First Prize ($1,000) goes to Luis Ramirez for Azure, a stunning four-movement work that evokes a dynamic road trip through the Manitoban prairies, capturing their seasons, colors, and breathtaking scenery. 🎉 Second Prize ($600) goes to Simon Alami from Montreal for Tea with Debussy & Pärt in Casablanca, a vivid and imaginative piece that envisions an intimate gathering over Moroccan tea, weaving the musical styles of Arvo Pärt and Claude Debussy into a lively conversation. Bravo to both composers for these extraordinary works! 🎶

"Moroccan Dances" by MMF Alum Simon Alami came from a desire to pay homage to the victims of the September 2023 earthquake that struck Morocco. Check out this clip from his piece performed on the American Modern Ensemble from our festival in June. Composers, apply now for the chance to hear your music performed by this amazing group!

The Mostly Modern Festival was an experience I will never forget. Had two of my compositions premiered in concert, heard an orchestral reading of another one of my pieces, composed a lot, learned a lot about composing, attended concerts galore, and made a lot of amazing friends throughout the whole experience. I am grateful to God for these past three weeks and what they have taught me, about music, life, and even faith. I can only give glory to God because of what he has done here; none of this was by my own merits, but by God’s providence, his grace, and his mercy. Because of this, I desire that everything I do, even coming down to notating or performing music, be done for him and him alone. His beauty and goodness necessitates excellence. All in all, I am grateful for these 3 amazing weeks and I am excited for whatever is in store for me in this next season of life. Mostly Modern Friends: I love you all and I am glad to have met you!!! God Bless you!!!
