My current read!!
Our Mutual Friend, by Charles Dickens.
The opening scene of this book takes place on the Thames river, and it will have you travel through space and time to London in the 19th century.
It was a bit challenging at first to get all the characters straight, but I think I'm OK now.
Can't wait to see how it all turns out!
One of the themes in this book is what happens to people who inherit money- how all of a sudden everyone wants to be their friend or ask them for money.
Have you seen that happen?

Charles Dickens tried to lock his wife up in an asylum because apparently she was not a good mother and an incompetent housekeeper. He also tried to coerce a doctor to declare Catherine mentally ill but the doctor refused to do so.

All of these peaked of course after he had fallen in love with 18-y.o. Ellen because he somehow had to "get rid" of his wife. Catherine found out about his affair when a bracelet he had ordered for Ellen was delivered to their house by mistake. Obviously, he denied everything, stating it was a matter of being polite.

He started blaming Catherine for having so many children (10) because she came from a large family and, under this excuse, decided they should sleep in separate beds with a bookshelf between them. Then, they divorce and Catherine had to move out.

Shortly after, he wrote a letter to his agent stating that it was Catherine’s idea to separate (nobody knew about his affair with Ellen) and that she was suffering from a mental disorder - the letter became public and nobody questioned anything given Dickens’ fame.

After their divorce, Dickens retained custody for all their children except Charles Dickens Jr.

He never acknowledged his relationship with Ellen and all his efforts went into hiding it.

Oh, Catherine published a book once. And everyone believed it was actually written by Charles Dickens, not her. Because, apparently, Catherine lacked the intelligence to write a book.

My current read!!
Shirley, by Charlotte Brontë.
It is so nice to be reacquainted with Charlotte Brontë's story-telling style!!
This story's main protagonist is actually Caroline, but she does meet Shirley about 133 pages into the book!
This book is actually considered historical fiction as it was inspired by some difficult economic times in Yorkshire that led to some riots.
Being French, I grew up learning history from a French perspective, with Napoleon portrayed as a hero and a national legend, but reading this book is showing me the other side of the story!!
I am enjoying the descriptions of nature and the deep-dive into Caroline's feelings.
I am in the process of preparing a video where I will read a passage from this book and have a discussion about it.
Any Brontë fans out there?🤗

Just started reading this book and I am really happy to be reading Charlotte Brontë again.
What I appreciate in her style is that there are descriptions of nature and descriptions of each character's personality traits, how their homes feel, which chair they sit in, who their ancestors are, and how they behave in different contexts. You are left feeling like you have a multi-faceted view of each person.
Some of the passages are so good that I am wondering if I should record myself reading them as a video on Youtube.
What do you guys think?📚🤗📚

Reorganizing my bookshelves!!
I once again have a "classics" shelf!
I hope to expand it in the future when I buy more clasics and perhaps even that green Clothbound edition of Villette I have been eyeing for a while(?)
Looking at the books reminds me of how I felt when I read them, so it's like happiness on a shelf!!📚😊

My favourite book covers. 🤍 I just went through my shelves to choose my favourite covers and came up with these four. I was surprised how similar they are in style. Maybe it’s just the mood I’m in but I have always loved these covers. Hasn’t made me read the books quicker though!

MEN and MASTERS

As soon as I reached this chapter in Hard Times titled “Men and Masters”, it immediately occurred to me that I have read a similar title not long before. Since the book has sufferings faced by working class during Industrial Revolution in its background, first thing that came to mind was North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. And voila here it is…a chapter titled “Masters and Men” (reversed order but nonetheless a happy coincident !!) ☺️☺️

Both the books first published just a few months apart. (1854-55)

Have you come across such small happy coincidences while reading ?
