LIGHT CANT ESCAPE | Double-X B&W 16mm

Filming was a wonderful experience, the format leads to a unique sense of focus and attention by everyone on set which I’d never experienced before. As soon as I conceived of “Light Can’t Escape” I knew it had to be shot on black and white 16mm. I’ve always loved experimental cinema, particularly the kind of work by filmmakers like Len Lye or Stan Brakhage. Logically, to me, if a black hole is a hole in our reality, surely then a black hole in a movie would be a hole in the film itself. This began our crazy journey devising a huge host of puppetry, projection, reverse photography, animation and optical effects to put this film together. I spent many hours punching holes into film in the lab, working in close collaboration with our editor/animator to get the effect desired. I wanted a punk movie that was unafraid to be grainy, dirty, handmade, and I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. In a very real way, this movie would not be possible without the stock and amazing developing support offered by the Kodak Lab London team, so thank you Kodak!

Light Can’t Escape
Australia | 2024

Harriet’s disaster of a life gets a lot weirder when she discovers a black hole in her apartment.

“Shot on 16mm black & white, Light Can’t Escape offers up images so crunchy you can practically feel the flakes and shards on your tongue as crumbs dust your leather skirt. In it, back-breaking practical effects and carpal-tunneling puppetry bring to life the unlikeliest friend an eviction-facing misfit can have: a literal black hole.

Raucous yet poignant and fully embracing a type of punky DIY ethos that feels increasingly like an ancient myth, the film is a rallying cry against all iterations of fascistic takeover. A constellation of middle fingers in all directions. It’s as satisfyingly rebellious as it is sincere and heartfelt, which today seems like one of the most rebellious acts possible.”

Seren’s 2nd Beeday Bee Party was a big success! He’s a big 2 year old now and didn’t want to have a photo with his Mama, hence my solo portrait at the start 🫡 Thank you to my sister Eden who made the most AMAZING bee cake 🥹 and to Mum and Dad for hosting what essentially reads as the Richmond Tigers fan club at their house. Exactly how toxic is yellow food colouring? 😵‍💫 P.S my Mum got stung but a REAL bee who came to the party!? 🐝

My little sister Eden got married yesterday. Her wedding was spectacular, but I wasn’t surprised. My family doesn’t do things by halves, and we truly embody the *DIY spirit*. I don’t have to tell you who did the flowers (not that I have any good pics here of them, this is a very random selection of snaps from when I actually had my phone on me!)

There was much reminiscing about our literal fairy tale childhood which had me weeping about every 20 minutes. My sister Eilish performed The Best Day by Taylor Swift with custom lyrics so I’m literally deceased as I type this. Eilish and I also did a speech in which we reflected on our sisterhood. In short - Eden is the wild card of our trio. She’s the popular one, the charismatic one, the hands on one, the one with fascinating secret talents and interests. To know her is to know a celebrity. To go anywhere with her is to be a VIP. She’s met a worthy match in her new husband Hugh, who I’m so happy to finally and formally welcome to the family. Thanks for adding another The Best Day to my list of them. Thanks for having me as your bridesmaid. Sorry that these pictures are pretty much all of Seren walking around the venue like he owns the place.

*P.S If you’re new here, my Mum and Dad did the flowers and installations. I’ll show you more pics soon when I get them!

Merry Christmas 2025 🎄❤️ We hosted our families for Christmas Eve in our newly finished garden 🪏a very chill Christmas Day at home and Christmas dinner at Nanna and Papa’s. Seren slept in this morning, a world record never before seen - 7.30am rise. Santa does exist.

After a two year jaunt around the planet, our little science fiction comedy Light Can't Escape is officially going online today as a @vimeostaffpicks !

I’ve joked before that in many ways this is my “second first film” (no shade to my prior efforts), a kind of exhalation of creative energy that I’d been bottling up over almost a decade of stasis. I threw everything into it; 16mm, black and white, puppetry, animation, experimental film techniques, Douglas Trumbull space stuff, punk rock, Hitchcock, Hausu and 50s sci-fi.

It was an absolute beast to shoot (never writing the word “montage” so casually again and NEVER writing a shower scene without having the location first), and it was all made possible by a passionate and inspiring crew who I am so blessed to have had work on this project with me. It’s been one of the great privileges of my life to see this film do as well as it has, screening all around Australia and the world and that’s a testament to the efforts of the people who put so much into making this a reality.

Light Can’t Escape is a film about the chaos of life; it’s about housing insecurity, unstable relationships and getting sucked into a vortex. And it’s about hating the moon. Hope you enjoy. <3 https://vimeo.com/1138703693
