NRC @nrcnl asked me and other authors to recommend a book that might make readers understand The United States better, for its 250th anniversary (rumor has it this is when empires tend to collapse, but anyways).

There is obviously a plethora of literature to read and recommend (which I often have) and although it’s not a substitute for personal proximity, it can provide some guidance.

For this moment, I chose our favorite US correspondents new book: ‘Maral in Magaland.’

“Sharifi travels with us through the United States with a sharp pen, healthy dose of humor, and the ability to get everyone talking as a ‘Dutch, German, or Danish?’ journalist, by simply listening. Serving up everything from Trump, abortion ban, Black Lives Matter, climate denial, Kamala Harris, Zohran Mamdani, Israel and Iran.

Despite all the shocking realism, the love for New York and America shines through. As one could argue for the rest of the country, slowly arising: in the anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis, a Latino high school student in North Carolina being protected by classmates, Mamdani’s victory in New York as a triumph for the working class and an indictment against the predatory super rich, the historic Super Bowl performance by megastar Bad Bunny advocating for unity. And the Caribbean, Indian, and Iranian spices found in the cabin of the apartment Sharifi shared with former roommates.

It might seem counterintuitive to recommend a book written by a Dutch-Iranian immigrant American to better understand the country. But if you know the United States, nothing makes more sense than that.”

Happy Fourth. May we see the liberation of all in this lifetime or the next.

HOW TO TOUCH GRASS

The next illustration market will take place in @dehondekop One of the participants is Simon Ruis. The market is on 09 of May from 11:00 to 17:00!

This is what Simon tells: “My name is Simon Ruis (2002), and I am an illustrator based in Utrecht. I would describe myself as detail-oriented, but with a loose drawing style. I prefer creating work for newspapers, music events, or book covers. However, I also often make work without knowing where it will end up.

I draw inspiration from all sorts of places: a strange bird, a bizarre situation, or a deeply rooted personal desire. It often starts with a spontaneous small sketch, which I then transform into animations, posters, screen prints, linocuts, and risograph prints.”
