My happy place.

Incredible race weekend in the Southern Drakensberg with great friends. Two ran the 36k, two ran the 65k, and one brave friend ran 100 MILES !!!! 160km !!!

I couldn't run because I'm still recovering from my knee surgery, but I had such an amazing time supporting, giving hugs, encouraging, and high fives at rainy aid stations in the middle of the night. Rain didn't stop us!

I'll never get tired of these views, or these friends.

These mountains. They humble you. They embrace you. They encourage you and they can break you. I breathed in the fresh, clean air, surrounded by the pungent and rich wildflowers, sage and protea. My feet were heavy with the water of the swollen streams, an iridescent double rainbow reaching all the way to the bottom of the valley. I trudged upwards, log step after log step, towards the rope ladder on the cliff side where the vultures nest. I look down upon the mountain, the reservoir and the valley, I'm so small, it's so majestic. These mountains, breathing life into my legs as I waded my way through grass that hung high above my head, no sign of a path, blades slicing my skin. My cheeks hurt from the smile that refused to fade on my face, I feel so alive. I hold my arms out wide as I skip down the steep slope leaping from loose rock to loose rock, feeling the air kissing my skin. These mountains, holding generations of stories in life. These mountains push you, humble you.

My fourth year running the Drakensberg Northern Trail, and third year running the 40k. I shaved 48 minutes off last year's time, coming in unexpectedly at 2nd place for the silver. I have hilarious, serious and inspiring conversations along the run, new friends and new adventures. Thank you @kzntrailrunning, as always, for a spectacular race through the rain, rainbows, sunrise and fog.

Friends that run together, hike together.

Either injury or post-race, we were all coming off something. It was strange to just walk with the people that you're so used to running with, but great conversation and a wonderful morning. ☀️

"Have you done this race before?" I asked him as we slowly slogged up the wooden steps.

"This is my 10th year - in a row," he added. "And it never gets easier!"

"I ran this on Thursday, and now again today. I've always wanted to do a double!" Another runner told me.

The fact that so many runners return year after year to take on this grueling yet breathtaking trail says something. Normally a 5-day hike, only the most tenacious and committed can secure a spot for this sold-out-in-minutes 40km trail race. The Otter Trail in Titsikamma Park on the Garden Route of South Africa is truly incredible.

Scenes from a wonderful weekend!! The Grail of Trail, the stunning and magnificent Otter Trail, conquered and enjoyed.

Another incredible Grail of Trail, @otterafricantrailrun gave us an incredible weekend. Through 36° heat and humidity, and relentless sun, those 7000+ put us all to the test. We lept theatrically into the Mighty Bloukraans to cool our sweating skin, and scrambled into any creek or stream we could find.

Blocks of ice and bananas fueled us as we trudged 41km east up the coast of the stunning Tsitsikama Park, a seal spotting, and beautiful protea in bloom.

The heat tested even the most elite athletes, and we were all thrilled, albeit limping, to have conquered this beautiful, rugged coastline.
