#Cotton is rarely traceable to a single pair of hands. Harvests may be aggregated and processed together long before the fibre becomes a T-shirt, pair of jeans, or bedsheet.

The idea of knowing the exact farmer behind a garment can sound intimate and reassuring, but cotton supply chains do not always work that way, and forcing them into that narrative can flatten reality. It can turn farmers into marketing devices, or reduce complex communities into a few names and faces chosen to stand in for an entire region.

So if connecting one garment to one farmer doesn’t necessarily reflect the reality of cotton production, why are we still encouraging you to meet farmers and hear their stories?

Simply because data cannot tell you everything. Farmers bring context that #traceability systems cannot capture on their own. They can speak to the pressures, trade-offs, local realities, and definitions of progress that shape what cotton production actually looks like on the ground. That knowledge comes from relationships with farmers, cooperatives, ginners, and local organisations who can tell you what a season actually looked like. Not as a story, as intelligence.

Good traceability should help us see the system more clearly, not be reduced to a country level nor to a neat story about one farmer and one field.

During their residency at Boccadivalle, Simply Diligent @simply___diligent explored the local landscape, working with native flora and fauna while experimenting with natural textures and dyes derived from leaves and flowers.

With a practice rooted in uncovering the stories behind responsible fashion and researching sustainable techniques, the residency was conceived as a space where hands-on experimentation and field research could come together.

Throughout their stay, we guided Simply Diligent in exploring Abruzzo’s rich textile heritage, with a particular focus on wool production and traditional weaving. Together, we visited local artisans as well as historic and contemporary weaving workshops, gaining a deeper understanding of the region’s textile history and craftsmanship.

Simply Diligent (@simply___diligent) is a collective formed by Ani (@anisuzette), Virginia (@virginiaroll), Macy (@ateaspoonofyouth) and Aisling (@____aisling ), who have joined forces to explore the ins and outs of fashion, ecology and human wellbeing.
Working at the intersection of research, visual storytelling and digital design, they translate complex systems into emotionally resonant narratives, making the invisible infrastructure of fashion tangible and relatable.
During their residency, they will experiment with natural dyeing and conduct research into the Abruzzo wool supply chain.

I went to the Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid expecting a normal museum moment and it was not that!

It feels like walking into a working studio where time is moving at a different speed.

Three things I can’t stop thinking about:

First, the dye garden. I didn’t actually get to see it (next time, I’m planning seasons better), but I loved knowing it’s there. A little botanical archive of colour. Plants that actually give you pigment, and fibre plants too. It’s not just pretty. It’s a reminder that colour can start as a living thing🪾🍃 🌼

Second, the most niche delight: 1700s traceability stamps woven in. Quality marks inside the tapestry itself so you knew where it was made. No tag. No paper trail. Just a built in signature that said, this is ours.

Third, the yarn storage. They literally store skeins up in the ceiling and it’s weirdly beautiful. Like walking under a canopy of colour. Practical, but also kind of poetic in the most unintentional way.

It made me laugh a bit because we act like traceability is some shiny new concept and they were doing it centuries ago, with thread.

At the beginning of January, Cotton Diaries team came together and shared reflections on the oddity of jumping into a ‘new year’, while the land and place around us remains at rest, in its wintering.

Today, on the Lunar New Year, Ani Wells reflects on agriculture, cotton, and how it follows its own rhythms, rather than the rigid lines of the Gregorian calendar.

She looks back into history, and across our global community, to unpack rituals, beliefs, and symbolic practices across farming cultures.

It’s time we ask: What would it mean to let cotton set the pace again? 🌙

This week, we hosted Transformers ED at Nişantaşı University, a full day designed to give students and emerging professionals a grounded understanding of denim, fibers and the future of Türkiye’s textile sector.

The day highlighted denim fundamentals, fiber innovation, circularity, product development and Türkiye’s evolving textile landscape. The program featured speakers from The LYCRA Company, Sharabati Denim, EREKS Blue Matters, Lenzing, Rematters, Colin’s, BOSSA and many more, offering clear, practical insight into how the sector actually works.

Throwing it back to Coração Local with @vicunhabrasil @vicunhaeurope , a moment that celebrated local cotton and local hands. Today, seeing them move into regenerative cotton and circular water systems makes it feel like the beginning of something much bigger.

Stay tuned for a very special short film from the mountains of Cat Cat, Vietnam, during a farm stay with the H’muong people, harvesting and dyeing with natural native indigo.
