This is the second work by Rickie Martin @gugumah_ for the Melbourne Polytechnic @melbpoly Collingwood campus.
It is titled ‘Endangered Species of the Kulin Nations’ and features eight endangered species.
2.4m x 1m leadlight and stained glass painting - these are eight species that are in grave danger of becoming extinct which Rickie wanted to highlight and he hopes that by raising awareness it will ensure that in 50 to 100 years these species still survive and thrive here.
More information on the Glaas Inc website.
Huge thanks to Ian Sinclair @sinclairiron for the perfect iron frame: Andy Crewes @twosunsglass for the installation: Gayle Silveira @glassbygayle and Shea Oberleuter @lewaglass for the assistance and support: Jordan Benson @jordanb_art for the lighting: Donna Kennedy @glaasinc for the project management: and Beth Wheeler @1000degrees.glass.studios for the glass signage.
Many thanks to Melbourne Polytechnic @melbpoly for the opportunity to highlight the wonderful talent of Rickie and to show the potential of contemporary architectural glass.
Thanks to our Glaas Inc First Nations community for their care and support.
It’s definitely worth a trip to the Collingwood campus to see this work as well as Bunjil The Creator, both of which sit so well in the beautifully refurbished building.

This is our 1000th post and how appropriate it is the amazing Bunjil the Creator by Rickie Martin @gugumah_
2.4m x 1.2m leadlight and stained glass painting - Bunjil is painted and fired in traditional stained glass method (each piece painted and fired 8 times) with sandblasted highlights on Bunjil’s feathers.
Rickie designed and made Bunjil the Creator for the foyer of the newly refurbished Collingwood campus of Melbourne Polytechnic @melbpoly and it is an inspiring and beautiful depiction of First Nations spirituality. More information on the Glaas Inc website.
Huge thanks to Ian Sinclair @sinclairiron for the perfect iron frame: Norm Beilby @armadalestainedglass and Andy Crewes @twosunsglass for the installation: Gayle Silveira @glassbygayle and Shea Oberleuter @lewaglass for the assistance and support: Jordan Benson @jordanb_art for the lighting: Donna Kennedy @glaasinc for the project management: and Beth Wheeler @1000degrees.glass.studios for the glass signage.

This grand entry in Kew evokes an understated sophistication, where the shift from porcelain tiles to rich oak parquetry marks a seamless transition between spaces. This elegant progression creates a sense of effortless movement, proving that the entrance is not merely a passage, but the opening chapter of a home’s narrative.

Sweeping curves, intricate mouldings, and our signature heart-motif balustrade create a bold architectural statement. Above, a cascading chandelier softens the space, filtering light with quiet elegance
— a staircase designed for impact.

More than a functional feature, this staircase in Glen Iris defines the character of the home. With broadleaf oak handrails and intricately crafted metal balustrades, it seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with modern sophistication, leaving a lasting impression in every detail.

Final shots of Nicholas Hovington and Maree Clarke’s cast iron Coolamon. The biggest one in the southern hemisphere, or so we like to think 😉

Some works have a lot of processes and this one had many journeys. The burl Nicholas carved came from Tasmania, which we took a silicon mould of in January. Then made a positive in gypsum which was then taken to the foundry, cast in two parts and welded back together with the help of Ian! Finally ground back at Artery we removed the weld line and removed the hooks. Thank you to everyone who laid a hand in helping complete this work.

You can now see the work at its home at Narrm Ngarrgu Library, North Melbourne.

Will be sharing a new work for @notfair_artfair ‘Alchemy’

This work explores new materials and processes that have expanded and collapsed my mind many times over.

A huge joy throughout this process has been working with other practitioners - such a delight in such a majoratively solo practice. Could never and would never want to go without!

A huge thank you to @patwongglass for making my glass form come to life
@funderefoundry for perfectly casting my intricate aluminium tripe and @nicholas_burridge for support aftercare for it
@sinclairiron for trusting in me to use your workshop and for opening up and weekends and always lending a helping hand
And for my off Insta friend Louis and @tazo_topz for being my tech wizards and
@steven.bellos for being my now and forever install king
Opening Saturday night! Come along to see all the gorgy works and say hi :)

Photos @biddle.biddle 💙 A studio photograph. A beige backdrop can be seen in the background. In front of it sits a tall sculpture. The base is a bright orange wobbly flower stem. Atop the stem sits a blue abstract blob with a central opening. And a light blue metal flower sits on the top side.
