Syntop Audio 131 - Karete Bu

Known for House grooves, UK-leaning rhythms and a soft spot for records with a little dust on them, karete bu steps away from her usual territory for this mix, diving deep into the Techno section of her record shelf.

What unfolds is an unexpected ride through warm chords, rolling grooves and timeless classics.

Sometimes all it takes is seeing your record collection from a different angle.

One moment you’re packing a few records for a new experimental night in Cape Town, then you blink and suddenly you’re commemorating 20 years of with some of the finest talent in the business, wondering where time went.

In 2026, Killer Robot will celebrate 20 years in existence. We started in 2006 in a bar named Fiction - the brainchild of Adam Klein and Jonathan Cline, and one of the only music venues on Cape Town’s Long Street at the time. Fiction was unique in that curation was entirely left up to the promoters that held residencies there, a model that has come to define most of Cape Town’s underground dance scene since.

Back then, techno as a genre definition had all but been banished from common parlance. The initial phases of Detroit and Berlin techno had been supplanted by a hyper commercialized sound - calling itself techno- that dominated radio airwaves and cheesy club playlists, and the word was best left unspoken. KR’s mission was to rebuild a scene from the ground up, with attention given to the full scope of what techno encompassed.

In the 20 years that followed we have hosted the full range from some of the finest exponents of the dark arts. From the future funk onslaught of Seth Troxler to the electro-thrash masterclass of Dave Clarke and
the Hacker. From the dark Nordic psychedelia of Anthony Linell and Evigt Morker to the warm grooves of XDB, and from the afterhours minimalism of Butane to the cosmic deepness of Ness & Claudio PRC.

KR is proud to have brought all of these distinguished names to our decks over the last two decades, as well as establishing strong alliances throughout our international and local networks. Our monthly residency at Mødular has allowed us to elevate local talent and maintain a high standard of curation in the booth and we are grateful for the consistent support from @patrick_modular_ and @costa_chishimba that has given us the freedom to discern.

We¹re thankful to all those who have been part of our journey thus far, from those early days, to right now. 2026 will see a special series of events to commemorate this milestone, and we hope you will join us in celebrating it together.
