Fase 5

Phase 5
Sanding is by far the most labor-intensive part. To get that ultra-smooth finish, we sand in 7 steps, from 60 up to 500 grit. Next up is protection: the board spends 24 hours in a mineral oil bath and is finished with a layer of beeswax for ultimate protection.

Fase 4

Phase 4
Next, the chamfered edges are routed along the top and bottom. In this stage, the cutting board can be fully customized to the client’s wishes by adding routed handles or a juice groove, for example.

Fase 3

Phase 3
Once everything is glued, we basically already have a cutting board. But of course, we want that unique staircase pattern. The final board needs to be 30 mm thick, so now we cut the panel into 33 mm strips. That extra 3 mm is the margin we need to plane the top and bottom perfectly flat later on.
Next, we rotate all the strips a quarter turn so the end grain faces up. To create the staircase pattern, we shift the strips up by 40 mm in an alternating pattern. We then glue the strips together again in this position. Once the glue is dry, we plane the cutting board to its final flat finish.

Fase 2

Phase 2
Before gluing, the strips are jointed and planed perfectly flat and straight. That’s why we intentionally cut them 3 mm thicker giving us plenty of margin to plane the wood to perfection.
The glue-up happens in two stages first, we glue the strips in pairs into square bars. Then, we assemble all those squares bars together into one solid piece.

Fase 1

Phase 1
We start by cutting the wooden strips to their rough dimensions. The final finished size needs to be 40 mm wide and 20 mm thick. Why? Because we’re gluing pairs of strips together to form a perfect square of 40mm by 40 mm.

How did Klaasje and Max’s cutting board come to life? I’ll show you in this and the upcoming Reels!
They really wanted a "staircase pattern" that seamlessly blends with their new kitchen. Since their countertop is light and the cabinets are dark brown, we wanted to keep the design balanced and clean. The perfect match? A combination of a light wood (French oak) and a deep brown wood (mahogany).

Crafting this board happened in several different stages. Follow the whole process in my upcoming Reels!

True craftsmanship where elegance and functionality meet in the new kitchen of Klaasje Meijer and Max van Geest. To create the perfect cutting board, we carefully selected the finest wood species and colors that seamlessly complement their new kitchen.

Klaasje and Max chose two beautiful types of wood, which were crafted into a stylish ‘staircase pattern’. This striking effect is achieved by placing narrow strips of end-grain wood together and shifting them alternatingly, beautifully revealing the characteristic steps.

With this premium cutting board, it’s not just about aesthetics, ergonomics played a crucial role as well. The height of the countertop and the thickness of the board are perfectly balanced, ensuring optimal comfort during daily use.
