![Updated weekly, SHAPE introduces and highlights a variety of current public events and exhibitions throughout the city.
This week, we highlight three exhibitions and one event:
📅 On view at @galleriahalmetoja from 4th September is Melina Paakkonen’s 'Paths', which takes the viewer along a path reminiscent of childhood picture books and board games. Her paintings invite us to look at them as though following a route in which choices must be made: there are possibilities, there are threats, and the outcome is left to chance.
📅 'I’m Thinking of You', opening at @galleriahuuto on 26th August, 18-20, is an exhibition project based on a reciprocal artistic exchange between Poland and Finland. Polish artists representing Galeria Pracownia Wschodnia are presenting works that engage with Finnish life and culture, while artists affiliated with Galleria Huuto will visit Poland next February to showcase pieces exploring Polish life and society. The exhibition focuses on micro-histories — small, personal narratives that rarely surface in textbooks but can be intimately explored through artistic practice.
📍 On 28th Aug, 11-14, Follow the Plants x Kenno Filmi film program takes place at Cinema Orion. Plants have long offered filmmakers ways of thinking through longing, memory, resistance, and power in different political contexts and through diverse cinematic formats. The film programme consists of 8 short and medium-length films that were produced over the last 70 years, blending various chrononologies and traditions from film history. Curated by Danai Anagnostou. Featured artists: AK Wane, Alana Hunt, Barbara Hammer, Catriona Gallagher, Elia Nurvista, Otar Iosseliani, Theo Panagopoulos, Yugantar. 📅 Riikka Annttonen's 'Vertere' opens at @sinnegalleri on 4th September. The exhibition of sculptures is rooted in queer experiences and exploring ways of illuminating, extending and opening up the boundaries that spring up around norms and normative thinking.
